TWO PEOPLE ARE DEAD INCLUDING A POLICE OFFICER AFTER A RAMPAGE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON IN SUNSET.  JULIE DARCE REPORTS.

Louisiana authorities say a man accused of killing a state trooper is now implicated in the death of another man.  The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office says Kevin Daigle was booked Wednesday with second-degree murder in the death of 54-year-old Blake Brewer of Moss Bluff.  A news release says investigators believe the same shotgun was used to kill both Brewer and Senior Trooper Steven Vincent.

Daigle also was booked with stealing the truck that he had run into a ditch before Vincent found him Sunday, and with possessing a firearm after a felony conviction.

 

A LAFAYETTE EDUCATION GROUP ALLEGES THAT A LOCAL CHARTER SCHOOL IS IN VIOLATION OF ITS CONTRACT WITH THE STATE.  ACCORDING TO POWER OF PUBLIC EDUCATION LAFAYETTE, STATE LAW REQUIRES ACADIANA RENAISSANCE CHARTER ACADEMY HAVE AT LEAST 66-POINT-9 PERCENT OF THEIR ENROLLMENT BE AT-RISK STUDENTS. THEIR CURRENT ENROLLMENT HAS JUST OVER THIRTY PERCENT AT-RISK STUDENTS, AND POWER OF PUBLIC EDUCATION HAS ASKED THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT AND THE LOUISIANA LEGISLATIVE AUDITOR TO ADDRESS THE SITUATION.  MARY LOUELLA RIGGS-COOK, PRESIDENT OF THE LAFAYETTE CHARTER FOUNDATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES, SAYS ANY STUDENT, WHO INDICATES ON THEIR APPLICATION THAT THEY ARE AT-RISK, IS AUTOMATICALLY ACCEPTED.

 

Gov. Bobby Jindal is urging President Barack Obama to skip talking about climate change when he visits New Orleans on Thursday to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.  The Louisiana governor, a Republican presidential candidate, sent a letter to the president Wednesday calling on Obama to rethink plans to bring up global warming.  In the letter, Jindal says Obama should “respect this important time of remembrance by not inserting the divisive political agenda of liberal environmental activism.”  The governor said Louisiana has devised a bipartisan coastal master plan aimed at lessening the damage of future storms and that a “lecture on climate change” wouldn’t improve that hurricane protection work.

 

Funds from the settlement over BP’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010 will be used to construct a permanent flood control structure in Bayou Chene.  The Courier reports the structure will protect St. Mary and several other parishes, including Terrebonne, Lafourche and Assumption. The announcement came Tuesday.

Chip Kline of the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority says the consent decree is expected to be signed early next year, but the state is trying to secure the money now to begin work on Bayou Chene.

 

WELSH POLICE, STATE POLICE AND JEFF DAVIS PARISH SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES ARE SEARCHING FOR A MAN WHO RAN FROM POLICE.   LAST NIGHT IN WELSH, OFFICERS ATTEMPTED TO PULL OVER A DRIVER FOR A TRAFFIC VIOLATION, BUT THE DRIVER SPED AWAY.  THE DRIVER WENT DOWN HIGHWAY 101 TO THE THORNWELL AREA.  WELSH POLICE SAYS THE DRIVER LEFT THE VEHICLE AND FLED ON FOOT, AND REMAINS ON THE LOOSE.

 

LAFAYETTE POLICE HAVE MADE AN ARREST IN A SHOOTING THAT HAPPENED JULY 28TH ON NORTH LOOP STREET.  CORPORAL PAUL MOUTON SAYS THEY ARRESTED 19-YEAR-OLD JAVARI GUIDRY ON TUESDAY.  TWO MEN WERE EACH SHOT THREE TIMES AND WERE HOSPITALIZED WITH MODERATE INJURIES.  GUIDRY HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH TWO COUNTS OF ATTEMPTED FIRST DEGREE MURDER, AND HIS BAIL HAS BEEN SET AT 150 THOUSAND DOLLARS.

 

Louisiana utility regulators have agreed to merge two Entergy units in the state into one company that will provide electricity to more than 1 million customers.  The Public Service Commission voted 4-1 Wednesday for the consolidation of Entergy Louisiana and Entergy Gulf States Louisiana.  The single utility company, with over $16 billion in assets, will be called Entergy Louisiana when the merger takes effect in October.  Phillip May, president of the two Entergy companies to be merged, says the combined utility will save customers at least $107 million over nine years.
