A child under the age of 1 is among the latest reported COVID-19 deaths in Louisiana. The state says 11 children younger than 18 have died from the disease in Louisiana since the pandemic began. The child’s death was one of 110 reported in Wednesday’s figures from the state department of  health. Hospitalizations statewide dropped slightly in Wednesday’s numbers to 2,844.

 

DEMONSTRATORS LINED THE STREETS OUTSIDE OUR LADY OF LOURDES HOSPITAL IN LAFAYETTE TO PROTEST VACCINE MANDATES.  THE PROTESTERS INCLUDED HEALTH CARE WORKERS AND THOSE SUPPORTING THEIR RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHETHER TO GET THE VACCINE OR NOT.  EARLIER THIS MONTH, THE ADMINISTRATION AT OUR LADY OF LOURDES ANNOUNCED THAT HEALTH CARE WORKERS THERE MUST BE VACCINATED BY NOVEMBER OR FACE TERMINATION.  SO FAR SIXTY-FIVE PERCENT OF THEIR EMPLOYEES HAVE RECEIVED THE VACCINE.

 

Louisiana’s secretary of state won’t seek to expand absentee-by-mail voting or increase the early voting period for the fall elections despite the latest COVID-19 surge. The state has offered more ways for people to absentee vote in a half-dozen elections since the pandemic began and boosted early voting days for some elections. But Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin said Wednesday he doesn’t intend to submit an emergency pandemic plan for the Oct. 9 and Nov. 13 elections. He said only a tiny percentage of voters used the last COVID-19 emergency rules to submit absentee ballots, and he added vaccines are now widely available.

IBERIA PARISH PRESIDENT LARRY RICHARD ANNOUNCED EIGHT LOCATIONS FOR RESIDENTS TO FILL SANDBAGS.  THEY ARE BEING MADE AVAILABLE BECAUSE OFFICIALS ARE ANTICIPATING HEAVY RAINS.  THE LOCATIONS INCLUDE THE B-O-M, GRAND MARAIS, COTEAU, AND LYDIA FIRE STATIONS, THE JEANERETTE AND RYNELLA FIRE DEPARTMENTS, THE DELCAMBRE WATER TOWER AND LOREAUVILLE CITY PARK.  SAND AND SANDBAGS WILL BE PROVIDED BUT RESIDENTS MUST BRING THEIR OWN SHOVELS AND FILL THE BAGS THEMSELVES.

 

 

The Lake Charles city council has appointed someone to fill a seat left vacant when its current representative died earlier this month. The American Press reports the Lake Charles City Council, during a special meeting Tuesday, appointed Marshall Simien as interim councilman for District A. He fills the seat following the Aug. 8 death of Councilwoman Mary Morris, who died of complications from COVID-19.  Simien served two terms in the same district before losing to Morris in the May 2013 election.
