A VERMILLION PARISH JURY HAS FOUND JALEN JUWAN LEVINE GUILTY OF THE MURDER OF FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD DYLAN PLOWDEN IN DECEMBER OF TWENTY-SEVENTEEN.  BESIDES THE FIRST-DEGREE MURDER CHARGE, THE JURY ALSO FOUND LEVINE GUILTY OF THE ATTEMPTED FIRST-DEGREE MURDER OF SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD JOUNAL KELLY.  LEVINE WILL BE SENTENCED IN NOVEMBER.  THE FIRST-DEGREE MURDER CONVICTION CARRIES A MANDATORY LIFE SENTENCE WITHOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE.

A SECTION OF HIGHWAY ONE SIXTY-FIVE IN JEFF DAVIS PARISH HAS BEEN RENAMED FOR A FALLEN FENTON POLICE OFFICER.  FRIENDS AND FAMILY GATHERED FOR THE UNVEILING OF THE SIGN THAT DESIGNATED THE HIGHWAY AROUND MILE MARKER ELEVEN AS THE SHANNON BROWN SENIOR MEMORIAL HIGHWAY.  BROWN WAS KILLED WHEN HIT BY A VEHICLE DURING A TRAFFIC STOP IN TWENTY-SIXTEEN.  FENTON POLICE OFFICERS AND BROWN’S FAMILY SAY THEY ARE HAPPY TO SEE HIS LEGACY KEPT ALIVE.

 

LOCAL AND STATE OFFICIALS CELEBRATED THURSDAY THE COMPLETION OF TWO REGIONAL DETENTION POND PROJECTS IN YOUNGSVILLE.  SEVEN YEARS AGO, SIX HUNDRED SIXTY HOMES IN YOUNGSVILLE WERE IMPACTED BY A MAJOR FLOOD.  THE TEN MILLION DOLLAR PROJECT, WHICH INCLUDES THE CREATION OF SEVEN PONDS, WAS FUNDED THROUGH THE FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY’S HAZARD MITIGATION PROGRAM.  THE PONDS, WHICH SPAN ABOUT FIFTY ACRES ALONG BAYOU PARC PERDUE AND COULEE LASALLE, WILL HOLD STORM WATERS DURING HEAVY RAIN EVENTS, REDUCING THE FLOW TO PARTS OF VERMILLION, SAINT MARTIN AND IBERIA PARISHES.

 

ONE PERSON WAS KILLED IN A SINGLE VEHICLE CRASH IN EUNICE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.  POLICE FOUND A VEHICLE ON THE DRIVER SIDE IN A DITCH ON THE NORTH SIDE OF EAST MAPLE STREET NEAR THE LEWIS STREET INTERSECTION.  A PERSON, THIRTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD PORSHA LASHANTE GUILLORY, WAS FOUND UNRESPONSIVE IN THE VEHICLE AND WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE SHE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD.  IT WAS LATER LEARNED A SECOND PERSON HAD BEEN IN THE VEHICLE BUT SOMEONE HAD TAKEN HER TO THE HOSPITAL TO BE TREATED FOR MINOR INJURIES.

 

LOUISIANA HAS LED THE NATION IN THE RATE OF IMPRISONMENTS SINCE TWENTY-TWENTY.  ACCORDING TO A NEW REPORT, THIRTY-EIGHT PERCENT OF ARRESTS IN THE STATE ARE DRUG-RELATED, MAKING IT THE LEADING SENTENCE FOR WHICH SUSPECTS ARE ARRESTED.  TWENTY-ONE PERCENT OF ARRESTS ARE ON GUN CHARGES, THE SECOND HIGHEST, AND THE THIRD HIGHEST OFFENSE IS FOR FRAUD, EMBEZZLEMENT OR THEFT.

 

AN EVANGELINE PARISH PRISON ESCAPEE HAS BEEN RECAPTURED.  LUIS GUEDEZ-FUENMAYOR HAD ESCAPED FROM THE PINE PRAIRIE CORRECTIONAL CENTER SATURDAY NIGHT.  HE HAD LAST BEEN SEEN THAT NIGHT BETWEEN EIGHT-THIRTY AND NINE.  THE ESCAPEE IS A MAN OF VENEZUELAN DESCENT.
