The Louisiana Education Department has launched its online portal that gives parents, teachers and others a chance to provide opinions on state standards in English language arts and mathematics.  The portal is an element of a compromise reached in the Legislature between supporters and opponents of Common Core standards.  Under that plan, educators and experts on four committees will review the national standards and report back to the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. That board will vote on the standards by March and send them to the governor and Legislature.

The former police chief in a small Avoyelles Parish town remains in jail after being booked in the death of his wife back in March.  The Town Talk reports  Charles Mayeux Jr., the former Evergreen chief, was arrested Tuesday on a warrant charging him with second-degree murder and aggravated arson.

Authorities say the charges stem from a March 21 fire at the home he shared with his wife, Shelly St. Romain Mayeux.  An initial investigation by the Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office determined that the fire was suspicious.
