Detectives say it happened at 6:17 a.m. when they responded to a 911 call of an armed robbery and shooting at a residence in the 800 block of Lake Palourde Road. During their investigation, dispatch received a second call from Teche Regional Medical Center regarding a male victim being treated for a gunshot wound to the upper torso, according to St. Mary Parish PIO Tracy Landry. After speaking with witnesses, detectives learned that 24-year old Dion Maize allegedly approached several subjects, pointed a handgun at them, and then demanded money, before firing the weapon and fleeing the scene. He was located at a residence on South Railroad Avenue in Morgan City and charged with armed robbery and attempted first degree murder. The victim was treated and released from the hospital.

(AP)  The Louisiana fire marshal’s office says a 13-year-old boy and his 8-year-old half-sister have died in a house fire in rural southwest Louisiana. Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Brant Thompson identifies them as Keadin Lisotta and Rachel Boyce. He says the children were home alone when the fire broke out early Saturday in the Beauregard Parish community of Ragley, near Moss Bluff. He says their parents were at a casino in Lake Charles, 21 miles south, and had left them with an aunt who lives nearby. He says the children went home, without permission, about an hour before the fire broke out. Their aunt reported the fire about 4:40 a.m.

Thompson says several relatives live nearby, and a group of young cousins often stayed out late, visiting each other’s homes.

(AP)  The last of the three Louisiana law enforcement officers killed in an ambush near a busy highway in Baton Rouge will soon be buried. Funeral services are planned Monday for police officer Montrell Jackson, a 32-year-old slain by a gunman who authorities said targeted law enforcement. Just three days before his death, Jackson — married with a four-month-old son — wrote a Facebook post detailing how difficult it was for him to be both a black man and a police officer. Baton Rouge residents have been mourning at a series of memorial and funeral services since Jackson, police officer Matthew Gerald and East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputy Brad Garafola, were killed in a July 17 shootout with Gavin Long. Gerald was buried Friday and Garafola on Saturday.

(AP)  A 17-year-old Rosepine boy has been accused of killing 16 domesticated hogs on someone’s property. The Town Talk reports the teenager was arrested on two counts of criminal trespassing, two counts of criminal damage to property and 16 counts of aggravated cruelty to animals. It was unknown if he has an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

The Vernon Parish Sheriff’s Office began in investigation Sunday after receiving a report that someone had shot and killed domesticated hogs on his property in the Rosepine area. The property owner called again Tuesday, saying more hogs had been shot and killed.

A news release Friday indicated detectives made contact with the suspect, who allegedly admitted to shooting and killing the hogs.

(AP)  Louisiana employer payrolls rose in June, as the state’s unemployment rate ticked down to 6.2 percent. The state’s jobless rate fell from 6.3 percent in May, but was level with the 6.2 percent recorded in June 2015. It remained tied for third-highest among the states.

Alaska had the worst jobless rate nationwide at 6.7 percent. The nationwide jobless rate was 4.9 percent. June Louisiana payrolls were 15,000 below year-ago levels. Used by many economists as their top labor market indicator, payrolls have fallen in part because of heavy oil and gas job losses. Both sets of figures, adjusted to cancel out seasonal changes, were released Friday by the U.S. Labor Department. The number of unemployed Louisianans fell below 135,000 in June, down 1,000 from May, but 1,000 above June 2015.
