A MAN AND WOMAN ARE DEAD AFTER A MURDER SUICIDE LED TO A CAR CRASH IN IOTA YESTERDAY.  CAROLINE MARCELLO REPORTS.

THE SISTERS OF A LAFAYETTE MAN, WHO WAS MURDERED ON JUNE SIXTH, SAY THEY WON’T STOP FIGHTING UNTIL HIS KILLER IS BEHIND BARS.  THIRTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD HAROLD CARMOUCHE WAS SHOT AND KILLED WHILE DRIVING ON INTERSTATE TEN NEAR CROWLEY.  SHERIFF K-P GIBSON SAYS THEY HAVE NOT MADE AN ARREST IN THE CASE WHICH IS STILL AN OPEN INVESTIGATION.  THE SISTERS OF CARMOUCHE, LENA LEWIS AND LATASHA NARCISSE, SPOKE WITH KLFY TV TEN, PLEADING WITH THE KILLER OR KILLERS TO TURN THEMSELVES IN.

 

Momentum is building for Louisiana lawmakers to hold an historic veto override session. Senate President Page Cortez said Wednesday that senators are likely to support the effort to try to overturn Gov. John Bel Edwards’ bill rejections. Cortez says Edwards’ spurning of a bill banning transgender athletes from participating on school sports teams appeared to have spurred enough backing among senators for the mid-July veto session. It would be Louisiana’s first veto session under the modern constitution, but it remains unclear if lawmakers will have the two-thirds votes required to override the Democratic governor’s vetoes.

 

A Westlake chlorine plant that burned last year after Hurricane Laura will get a $170 million replacement. The Toronto-based owners and Gov. John Bel Edwards announced plans yesterday for the new BioLab plant in Westlake. A news release says the new plant will produce a significantly greater amount of swimming pool products than the one it’s replacing. The company says it will keep 19 jobs and add 82 with an average salary of $76,000.

 

A DRIVER WAS KILLED ON I-TEN NEAR BUTTE LAROSE AFTER HE EXITED HIS VEHICLE FOLLOWING AN ACCIDENT.  AN HISPANIC MALE, WHOSE NAME WAS NOT RELEASED, DRIVING A SEDAN, WAS STRUCK FROM BEHIND BY A HONDA PILOT S-U-V DRIVEN BY JOSE GONZALEZ OF HOUSTON.  WHILE THE MAN WAS STANDING NEXT TO HIS VEHICLE, HE WAS STRUCK AND KILLED BY A JEEP LIBERTY S-U-V.  THE DRIVER OF THE PILOT AND THREE PEOPLE IN THE JEEP WERE TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL FOR TREATMENT OF MODERATE TO MINOR INJURIES.

 

THE LAFAYETTE TRANSIT SYSTEM WILL OBSERVE THE JULY FOURTH HOLIDAY ON JULY FIFTH.  THAT MEANS ALL BUS SERVICES WILL BE CLOSED MONDAY.  BUS SERVICE IN LAFAYETTE PARISH WILL RESUME ON TUESDAY.  TRASH COLLECTION IN THE PARISH THAT’S NORMALLY PICKED UP BY REPUBLIC SERVICES ON MONDAY WILL BE COLLECTED AS NORMAL.

 

The cap for how much Louisiana’s lobbyists can spend to wine and dine public officials is edging higher  The limit lobbyists can spend on food and drink for state lawmakers, other elected officials and public employees is growing from $63 to $65 per person, per occasion with the start of the new state budget year. The Louisiana Board of Ethics oversees the lobbying spending restrictions. It made the adjustment at a meeting in March, to take effect with the latest state fiscal year.

 

THE JEFFERSON DAVIS PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS ASKING THE PUBLIC’S HELP IN FINDING A MISSING KINDER MAN.  NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD MORRIS WILLIAMS WAS LAST SEEN AT AROUND FOUR A-M YESTERDAY ON HIGHWAY THREE-EIGHTY-THREE NEAR VILLAGE CEMETARY ROAD.  WILLIAMS IS BLACK, FIVE-FEET-SIX AND AROUND TWO HUNDRED POUNDS AND WAS LAST SEEN WEARING A WHITE T-SHIRT AND BLUE WARMUP PANTS.  ANYONE WHO KNOWS HIS WHEREABOUTS IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE JEFF DAVIS PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE OR CALL NINE-ONE-ONE.
