A MAN WAS SHOT IN BEAVER, LOUISIANA, YESTERDAY AFTERNOON AFTER GETTING INTO AN ALTERCATION AT A BIRTHDAY PARTY.  48-YEAR-OLD DE’LANZO VEAL WAS TAKEN TO A HOSPITAL IN OAKDALE, WHERE HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD.  KATRINA THOMAS WAS ALSO SHOT, BUT WAS TREATED AND RELEASED.  THE EVANGELINE PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE HAVE ARRESTED BRANDON PERKINS, WHO IS BEING HELD IN THE PARISH JAIL ON A CHARGE OF SECOND DEGREE MURDER.

 

OPERATIONS COMMANDER CAPTAIN NATHAN TROY KELLER IS RETIRING AFTER THIRTY YEARS WITH THE LAKE CHARLES POLICE DEPARTMENT.  KELLER RECEIVED A NUMBER OF AWARDS DURING HIS TIME IN THE DEPARTMENT INCLUDING SUPERVISOR OF THE YEAR, OFFICER OF THE YEAR AND VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR.  DURING HIS TIME AS PART OF THE COMMUNITY POLICING DIVISION, HE HELPED IMPLEMENT A NUMBER OF PROGRAMS.  THEY INCLUDED PASTORS ON PATROL, NEIGHBORHOOD WATCHES, BACK TO SCHOOL PROGRAMS AND COMMUNITY MEETINGS.

 

ONE PERSON WAS SHOT AND KILLED IN CROWLEY SATURDAY NIGHT AFTER A ROAD RAGE INCIDENT ON THE INTERSTATE.  POLICE SAY THE TWO WERE PLAYING A GAME OF CAT AND MOUSE WHEN THEY GOT OFF AT EXIT 82 ON THE WESTBOUND SIDE.  DURING THE CONFRONTATION, ONE OF THE DRIVERS SHOT THE OTHER, WHO WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL, WHERE HE LATER DIED.  CROWLEY POLICE HAVE ARRESTED THE ALLEGED SHOOTER, 20-YEAR-OLD BYRON DEPAUL FRANCIS JUNIOR OF CROWLEY, WHO HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH SECON DEGREE HOMOCIDE.  THE NAME OF THE VICTIM HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED.

 

Gov. John Bel Edwards celebrated the budget and tax deal reached by Louisiana lawmakers.  The Democratic governor declared Sunday night: “The fiscal cliff is now gone, and we have predictability ahead of us.”  The House and Senate ended their third special session this year with a sales tax agreement and a spending plan for the $463 million the tax will raise in the upcoming year.  Lawmakers agreed to renew 0.45 percent of an expiring 1 percent sales tax, putting the state sales tax rate at 4.45 percent on July 1.

AN ACCIDENT ON I-TEN WEST OF WELSH SATURDAY LEFT ONE CAR SPLIT IN TWO, BUT THERE WERE ONLY MINOR TO MODERATE INJURIES FOR THOSE INVOLVED.  SERGEANT JAMES ANDERSON OF LOUISIANA STATE POLICE SAYS THE DRIVER OF A HONDA ACCORD TRAVELING WEST, LOST CONTROL,WENT ACROSS THE MEDIAN, AND WAS STRUCK BY AN EASTBOUND CHEVROLET TRAX, SPLITTING THE ACCORD IN TWO.  THE DRIVER OF THE ACCORD, 20-YEAR-OLD THUY PHUONG ANH NGUYEN OF LAKE CHARLES, WAS CHARGED WITH CARELESS OPERATION.  ANDERSON SAYS THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION IS IN THE PROCESS OF INSTALLING CABLE BARRIERS ON MANY DIVIDED HIGHWAYS IN THE STATE, AND THAT INCLUDES I-TEN IN JEFF DAVIS PARISH.

 

Authorities say the body of a man has been found on the shoulder of a Louisiana roadway after he was shot to death.  Vermilion Parish Sheriff Mike Couvillon tells news outlets that deputies found 24-year-old Stephain Brailey with multiple gunshot wounds on the side of the roadway just south of Maurice on Friday morning.  The sheriff says detectives are actively investigating the homicide and are attempting to determine the motive of the shooting.

 

Louisiana will take longer than expected to pick the company to replace the state’s decade-old voting machines.  In May, the Secretary of State’s Office said a winning bidder was expected to be chosen this month. But the agency said Thursday that timeline has been pushed back.  The agency wants to phase in the new equipment by 2020.
