Louisiana-Lafayette basketball recruit Herman Williams has died while playing basketball in his home state of Florida.  Ragin’ Cajuns coach Bob Marlin says the death of the 19-year-old Williams has hit his program hard.  Authorities are investigating the cause of death after Williams collapsed on a court in his hometown and could not be revived.  Williams was a standout player at Mariana High School in Jackson County, Florida, averaging 17 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists while leading the Bulldogs to 20 wins and a playoff appearance in his senior season.

IBERIA MEDICAL CENTER HAS ENTERED INTO A COLLABORATIVE AGREEMENT WITH LAFAYETTE GENERAL HEALTH, WHICH ENHANCES AN AFFILIATION BETWEEN THE TWO THAT BEGAN LAST AUGUST.  THE NEW AGREEMENT DOES NOT CHANGE THE OWNERSHIP OR GOVERNANCE OF IBERIA MEDICAL.  DAVID GRONER, THE CHAIRMAN OF IBERIA’S BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS, SAYS THE AGREEMENT WILL ALLOW LAFAYETTE GENERAL TO OFFER ADDITIONAL SUPPORT AND RESOURCES.  LAFAYETTE GENERAL HEALTH PRESIDENT DAVID CALLECOD TELLS THE DAILY ADVERTISER THAT THEY CAN NOW OFFER MORE TECHNOLOGY AND PURCHASING POWER AS WELL AS ACCESS TO THEIR PATIENT EXPERIENCE BLUEPRINT.

 

Gov. John Bel Edwards has signed into law new limits on drone use in Louisiana.

A bill by Rep. Stephen Dwight, a Republican from Lake Charles, will restrict drone use near schools, school property or correctional facilities. It includes exceptions for police, situations where the landowner grants permission and for pre-agreed recordings like sporting events.  The law takes effect Aug. 1.

 

Senators are having trouble working out a final version of their plans to spend the $284 million raised in the special legislative session.  The Senate Finance Committee planned a Tuesday meeting to craft its version of the bill to plug the money into next year’s budget. But after delaying the meeting twice, the committee hearing was canceled entirely and rescheduled for today.  Committee Chairman Eric LaFleur of Ville Plattesaid the House version of the budget bill contained $27 million more than the state has money available, double-counting savings from the state’s Medicaid expansion that had already been used.

SUDDENLINK CABLE IS CONVERTING TO ALL-DIGITAL IN LAKE CHARLES AND SULPHUR BEGINNING JULY 19TH AND IN DERIDDER ONE WEEK LATER.  THAT MEANS ANY CUSTOMERS THAT PLUG THEIR CABLE DIRECTLY INTO THE TV WILL HAVE TO GET A SET-TOP BOX.  COMPANY SPOKESMAN GENE REGAN TELLS KPLC TV THAT THEY WILL PROVIDE THE BOXES FREE OF CHARGE UNTIL LATE 2017.  HE SAYS THE SWITCH TO ALL-DIGITAL WILL MEAN BETTER PICTURE QUALITY.

 

YOUTH FROM THE CHITIMACHA TRIBE ARE THE RECIPIENTS OF 100 THOUSAND DOLLARS IN FEDERAL FUNDS.  THE MONEY IS TO BE USED TO HELP THEM IN CLEANING UP THE BAYOU TECHE, WHICH SUFFERED A RECENT OIL SPILL, AND PORTIONS OF THE GULF.  THE MONEY IS COMING FROM THE DEEPWATER HORIZON SETTLEMENT.  THE FUNDS WILL HELP EXTEND THE CHITIMACHA’S YOUTH PROGRAM TO SIX WEEKS, DURING WHICH THEY WILL CLEAN THE WATERWAYS AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES.
