CHURCH POINT POLICE HAVE ARRESTED A MAN FOR ALLEGEDLY SHOOTING AT A WOMAN IN A VEHICLE.  THE WOMAN TOLD POLICE THAT SHE WAS DRIVING DOWN LEONIE STREET SUNDAY WHEN TWENTY-FOUR-YEAR-OLD TYLER ALFRED RAN OUT AND FIRED A SHOT AT HER VEHICLE.  THE BULLET ENTERED THROUGH THE BOTTOM OF THE DRIVER’S SIDE DOOR.  ALFRED HAS BEEN BOOKED INTO THE ACADIA PARISH JAIL ON CHARGES OF ATTEMPTED SECOND-DEGREE MURDER AND ILLEGAL DISCHARGE OF A FIREARM.

 

THE PI KAPPA ALPHA FRATERNITY AT U-L LAFAYETTE HAS BEEN SUSPENDED FOR THREE YEARS AFTER ALLEGATIONS OF HAZING THAT HAPPENED IN THE FALL SEMESTER.  THE HAZING INVOLVED SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND THE PERFORMANCE OF CALISTHENICS.  THE U-L POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS ISSUED SUMMONSES TO SEVEN MEMBERS OF THE FRATERNITY AND A FORMER MEMBER ON MISDEMEANOR CHARGES RELATED TO HAZING.  U-L HAS A ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY FOR HAZING.

 

A lawyer for Gov. John Bel Edwards says the governor has agreed to testify before a bipartisan committee investigating allegations of a cover-up in the deadly 2019 arrest of Black motorist Ronald Greene. Matthew Block relayed the information in a public letter to the committee. State Rep. Clay Schexnayder is the Republican House speaker. He cited “serious questions that can only be answered by” the Democratic governor and his staff.

THERE WAS A FATAL ACCIDENT LAST NIGHT ON MAIN STREET IN VILLE PLATTE.  ONE PERSON WAS KILLED IN A TWO VEHICLE ACCIDENT, WHICH HAPPENED AT AROUND EIGHT-THIRTY P-M.  THE NAME OF THE VICTIM, WHO WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE, HAS NOT YET BEEN RELEASED.  THE CRASH REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

 

Book displays targeting specific groups or topics such as Gay Pride Month are prohibited indefinitely at public libraries in Lafayette Parish. The Advocate quotes Library Director Danny Gillane as saying Tuesday that the new policy will be in place “for the foreseeable future,” and will also include Women’s History Month and Native American history. Gillane said he made the decision in an effort to protect the library and its collection of books and films. Matthew Humprey, president of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays Lafayette, says that a lawsuit is possible.

 

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards has vetoed legislation that opponents said enabled predatory lending. The bill was pushed by Republican Sen. Rick Ward of Port Allen, who said it would open up loan opportunities for people who have trouble obtaining loans. The Advocate reported that the bill would have allowed so-called payday lenders to offer installment loans of up $1,500, with fees and interests totaling 100% of the amount loaned. In his Tuesday veto message, the Democratic governor said that the bill doesn’t adequately protect people from predatory lending practices.

 

ONE OF THE SEVEN PEOPLE ARRESTED IN THE MURDER OF SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD GARON LEWIS OF NEW IBERIA HAS HAD THE CHARGES DISMISSED.  LAST WEEK, THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE FORMALLY DISMISSED THE CHARGES AGAINST KENRAY LEDET WHICH INCLUDED CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT SECOND DEGREE MURDER.  LEDET’S ATTORNEY, TODD CLEMONS, COMMENDED THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE FOR DOING THE RIGHT THING, BUT, HE SAYS, LEDET SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ARRESTED AND CHARGED BECAUSE THE STATE LACKED CREDIBLE EVIDENCE.  CLEMONS SAYS LEDET SPENT FIVE MONTHS IN JAIL BEFORE HE WAS RELEASED ON BOND.
