LAFAYETTE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING AN ARMED ROBBERY AT A SUBWAY RESTAURANT IN LAFAYETTE.  IT HAPPENED SATURDAY EVENING AT THE SUBWAY IN THE STIRLING LAFAYETTE SHOPPING CENTER ON LOUISIANA AVENUE.  NO EMPLOYEES WERE INJURED AND POLICE HAVE NO SUSPECTS.  AN EYEWITNESS TELLS KLFY TV THAT THE ROBBERS LEFT A HUGE MESS OF FOOD ON THE FLOOR.

 

Republican candidate for governor Ralph Abraham has won Louisiana’s version of the Iowa Straw Poll.  Southwestern Louisiana Republicans hosted the state’s first-ever gubernatorial straw poll Saturday afternoon in “I-oh-way.”  They hope the event helps determine a clear front-runner in GOP efforts to unseat Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards this fall.  Abraham, a third-term congressman from northeast Louisiana, received 180 votes, while Baton Rouge businessman Eddie Rispone got 94 votes.

 

AN OPELOUSAS MAN WAS SHOT AND KILLED IN THE DRIVEWAY OF HIS HOME WHILE IN HIS VEHICLE AT AROUND THREE A-M SUNDAY MORNING.  THE HOME WAS IN THE 600 BLOCK OF MARTIN LUTHER KING DRIVE.  THE VICTIM WAS 49-YEAR-OLD STANLEY BOXIE OF OPELOUSAS WHO SUFFERED MULTIPLE GUSHOT WOUNDS.  POLICE CHIEF MARTIN MCLENDON TELLS KATC TV THAT BOXIE WAS AMBUSHED AS HE WAS ARRIVING HOME.  THERE ARE NO SUSPECTS AT THIS TIME.

 

Thousands of Louisiana homeowners with damage from the 2016 floods are a step closer to accessing federal aid.  The Advocate reports the duplication-of-benefits issue that has restricted homeowners from getting Restore Louisiana grants because they sought Small Business Administration loans to help with rebuilding has been handed off from the Trump Administration to Gov. John Bel Edwards’ administration.  Pat Forbes, executive director of the state Office of Community Development, says the state has spent several months preparing for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to issue formal parameters for carrying out a change approved last fall by Congress that gives residents access to the money. HUD unveiled its 44-page guidance Friday.

TUTEN PARK IN LAKE CHARLES HAS REOPENED AFTER NEARLY TWELVE YEARS.  IRVIN LOUQUE, LAKE CHARLES’ PARKS PROGRAM MANAGER, TELLS KPLC TV THAT TUTEN PARK LOST A LOT OF CANOPY AFTER HURRICANE RITA AND, WITH THE EXTRA SUNSHINE ALLOWED TO GET THROUGH, IT CAUSED OVERGROWTH.  FOUR YEARS AGO, COMMUNITY PARTNERS BEGAN REBUILDING TRAILS AND NOW THERE ARE FOUR THOUSAND FEET OF NEW NATURE TRAILS.  THE PARK WILL BE OPEN TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY FROM NINE TO SEVEN, OPENING AT NOON ON SUNDAYS AND CLOSED EVERY MONDAY.

 

A NEW CHICK-FIL-A RESTAURANT IS PLANNED FOR NEW IBERIA.  AUSTIN AND AMY MILKE ANNOUNCED ON SOCIAL MEDIA THAT THE NEW RESTAURANT WILL BE OPENING NEXT YEAR IN THE LAGNIAPPE VILLAGE SHOPPING CENTER ON ADMIRAL DOYLE DRIVE.  THE NEW STORE WILL BE ABLE TO SEAT 130 CUSTOMERS AND THE PARKING LOT WILL HOLD UP TO 75 VEHICLES.  THEY SAY PLANS ARE TO HIRE SEVENTY EMPLOYEES.

 

Some Louisiana drivers will see their car insurance rates drop starting later this summer.  Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon announced Thursday that he has approved a 2.2% rate decrease for private passenger automobile policies through Progressive Security Insurance.  The insurance department says Progressive is the second-largest auto insurer in Louisiana. Donelon says more than 175,000 of the company’s policyholders will see the lower rate when they renew their policies, starting in September.
