ONE PERSON WAS KILLED AND ANOTHER INJURED IN A SHOOTING ON NIMITZ STREET IN EUNICE.  IT HAPPENED AT AROUND SIX-THIRTY LAST NIGHT.  THE PERSON KILLED WAS AN ADULT MALE AND ANOTHER ADULT MALE WAS TRANSPORTED TO THE HOSPITAL.  POLICE CHIEF RANDY FONTENOT SAYS THEY HAVE A SUSPECT IN CUSTODY AND ARE LOOKING FOR ANOTHER SUSPECT WHO FLED THE SCENE.

 

THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL SYSTEM APPROVED A ONE TIME STIPEND FOR ALL OF ITS FULL TIME AND PART TIME TEACHERS AND SUPPORT STAFF FOR “ALL OT THE DUTIES IMPOSED ON THEM THIS YEAR.”  CAROLINE MARCELLO HAS MORE.

Louisiana is offering its residents the ability to show digital proof of their coronavirus vaccination on their cellphones through the state’s voluntary digital license app. Gov. John Bel Edwards on Wednesday announced the new feature available on the LA Wallet mobile app. The effort to make it easier for people to prove their coronavirus vaccine status comes as state lawmakers consider measures that would prohibit requiring proof of immunization against COVID-19 to enter state-owned or state-financed buildings and facilities. Louisiana has had trouble persuading people to get the shots, with the state not drawing down its full federal allocation of vaccine doses for the last three weeks.

 

PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN IS VISITING LAKE CHARLES TODAY TO PROMOTE HIS AMERICAN JOBS PLAN.  HE WILL ARRIVE AT THE CHENNAULT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT AT TWELVE FIFTEEN AND DELIVER A SPEECH NEAR THE CALCASIEU RIVER BRIDGE AT ONE TWENTY-FIVE.  GOVERNOR JOHN BEL EDWARDS WILL BE MEETING THE PRESIDENT IN LAKE CHARLES.  THEY ARE EXPECTED TO TALK ABOUT HURRICANE RECOVERY, INFRASTRUCTURE AND THE PRESIDENT’S PLAN.

 

AN IBERIA PARISH GRAND JURY HAS INDICTED A NEW IBERIA WOMAN FOR SECOND DEGREE MURDER IN THE DEATH OF HER NEWBORN DAUGHTER IN NINETEEN-NINETY-FOUR.  THE BODY OF THE NEWBORN GIRL WAS FOUND IN A TRASH CAN AT A JEANERETTE CAR WASH AND MORE THAN TWO HUNDRED PEOPLE ATTENDED THE FUNERAL FOR THE GIRL WHO WAS KNOWN AS BABY JANE DOE.  THE CORONER AT THE TIME DETERMINED THE BABY WAS ALIVE WHEN IT WAS PLACED IN THE FIFTY-FIVE GALLON DRUM WITH THE UMBILICAL CORD AND PLACENTA STILL ATTACHED.  IN TWENTY-NINETEEN, THE IBERIA PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE USED D-N-A TO LEAD THEM TO THE CHILD’S MOTHER, FIFTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD SONIA CHARLES, WHO WAS BOOKED INTO THE IBERIA PARISH JAIL ON A TWO HUNDRED FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLAR BOND.

 

THE CITY OF CROWLEY WAS NAMED THE CLEANEST CITY FOR THEIR DISTRICT IN THE CLEANEST CITY COMPETITION HELD TUESDAY.  THE CITY WILL NOW COMPETE IN THE STATE CONTEST WHICH TAKES PLACE IN THE LAST TWO WEEKS OF MAY.  THE LOUISIANA GARDEN CLUB DISTRICT SEVEN CLEANEST CITY CHAIRWOMAN KATHY TELL SAYS THE AWARD REPRESENTS A COMMUNITY THAT CARES ABOUT AND TAKES PRIDE IN THEIR CITY, THEIR NEIGHBORHOODS AND WHERE THEY WORK AND LIVE.  MAYOR TIM MONCEAUX SAYS CROWLEY HAS A CHALLENGE AHEAD WITH THE STATE CONTEST AND URGED RESIDENTS TO KEEP CROWLEY LITTER FREE, NOT ONLY FOR THE CONTEST, BUT YEAR-ROUND.

 

LOUISIANA ADDED THREE HUNDRED FIVE NEW CONFIRMED COVID-NINETEEN CASES TODAY, ACCORDING TO THE DAILY REPORT FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH.  THERE WERE NINE MORE DEATHS STATEWIDE.  THE NUMBER OF HOSPITALIZATIONS FOR COVID-NINETEEN ROSE BY TWENTY-ONE, BUT THE NUMBER OF PATIENTS ON VENTILATORS DECREASED BY FIVE TO THIRTY-THREE TOTAL.

 

ACADIANA HAD TWO MORE CONFIRMED COVID-NINETEEN DEATHS, IN ST. LANDRY AND ST. MARY PARISHES.  THERE WAS ONE MORE DEATH IN SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA, WHICH WAS IN CALCASIEU PARISH.  ACADIANA HAD SIXTY-NINE NEW CASES.  SAINT LANDRY PARISH HAD THE MOST WITH FIFTEEN.  SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA ADDED 18 CASES, INCLUDING FOURTEEN IN CALCASIEU PARISH.
