(AP)  A deluge that began before dawn yesterday flooded houses and cut off roads across southwest Louisiana. Radar estimates more than 6 inches of rain fell in parts of Calcasieu and Jefferson Davis parishes and more than 5 inches fell in parts of Acadia, Lafayette, St. Landry and St. Martin parishes, as bands of thunderstorms moved from west to east. Much of the areas was already soggy from earlier rain. Some of the worst flash flooding was between Lafayette and Opelousas, where Interstate 49 was closed for a time yesterday morning. Police and government agencies rescued motorists near Sunset and Grand Coteau, as well as in Lake Charles. Many other state and local roads were closed. Flooding of homes and businesses was reported in places including Lake Charles, Carencro and Henderson.

The credit will cover several months of free electricity for the average customer. An investor group led by New York-based Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets bought Cleco Corp. in April. The state Public Service Commission approved the $4.7 billion sale in March. NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports the final agreement includes an array of sweeteners, including $136 million in electricity bill credits for customers and $7 million in grants to be administered by the state economic developers in Cleco’s service territory. About 286,000 customers will receive a one-time credit averaging about $475. Credits will be applied to monthly bills starting in July until they run out.
