Seven former sheriff’s deputies have been sentenced to prison terms stemming from a Justice Department investigation of prisoners’ beatings at a Louisiana jail.

The Advocate reports that a federal judge in Lafayette on Tuesday sentenced the former Iberia Parish sheriff’s deputies to prison terms ranging from six months to more than four years.  Sheriff Louis Ackal was acquitted last year of federal civil rights charges. Ten of Ackal’s deputies pleaded guilty and had agreed to cooperate with prosecutors in their case against the sheriff.

OUR LADY OF LOURDES HOSPITAL IN LAFAYETTE HAS NAMED A NEW C-E-O, WHO WILL BEGIN WORK ON MAY FIRST.  W. BRYAN LEE WILL BE REPLACING WILLIAM F. “BUD” BARROW, WHO ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT LATE LAST YEAR.  LEE WAS MOST RECENTLY THE CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER AND INTERIM C-E-O AT OSCEOLA REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER IN KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA.  HE SAID IN A STATEMENT THAT HE WAS EXTREMELY IMPRESSED WITH LOURDES AND HE AND HIS WIFE HAD BEEN SEARCHING FOR A PLACE TO RAISE THEIR BOYS THAT HAD A SENSE OF COMMUNITY AND FAMILY VALUES.

 

The state’s agriculture secretary says 15 credit card “skimming” devices have been found on gasoline pumps in different parts of the state in the past month.

The devices are used by thieves to steal credit card information from motorists.

Agriculture Secretary Mike Strain says the devices are becoming harder to detect. The devices were found in nine parishes including Calcasieu, Lafayette, and St. Landry parishes.  Strain is encouraging motorists who pay at the pump to closely monitor their credit and debit card charges.

BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, HAS BEEN FREE ON 25 THOUSAND DOLLARS BOND AND HAS BEEN PUT ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE BY THE DIOCESE OF LAFAYETTE.  A TECHNICIAN AT A REPAIR SHOP, WHO WAS WORKING ON BROUSSARD’S COMPUTER FOUND CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IMAGES AND REPORTED IT TO THE AUTHORITIES.  BROUSSARD WAS CHARGED WITH 500 COUNTS OF POSSESSION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY.

Republican lawmakers on the House budget-writing committee are resisting suggestions that Louisiana’s budget needs more money next year. Instead, they’re suggesting they’ll be looking for deeper cuts.  The Appropriations Committee opened hearings Tuesday on Gov. John Bel Edwards’ state spending plan for the fiscal year that starts July 1.  Representative Blake Miguez, a Republican from Erath, says he can’t support tax hikes when workers in his district are struggling with the oil and gas industry decline.
