The Diocese of Lafayette will install its newest leader in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Lafayette next month, when Basile native The Rev. J. Douglas Deshotel is formally named the diocese’s seventh bishop.  The Advocate reports the April 15 ceremony will be at 2 p.m.. Only those who are formally invited to the bishop’s installation will be allowed inside the cathedral.  Seating for those without invitations will be available next door in the Cathedral Carmel Elementary School gymnasium.

 

A BODY WAS FOUND IN A DITCH OFF OF SWISCO ROAD IN SULPHUR YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.  COMMANDER JAMES MCGEE OF THE CALCASIEU PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS THEY RECEIVED CALLS ABOUT THE BODY AT AROUND FIVE P-M.  HE SAYS THE BODY OF THE UNKNOWN PERSON WAS FOUND PARTIALLY IN A CULVERT.  THERE IS NO OTHER INFORMATION AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

Louisiana’s unemployment rate was flat in February, as the number of people finding jobs kept pace with a growing labor force.  The jobless rate was flat at 5.9 percent from January, and below February 2015’s rate of 6.7 percent.  A separate survey shows payrolls fell by 5,000 from January to February, pushing them nearly 19,000 below year-ago levels, signaling continued weakness in Louisiana’s economy. Oil and gas employment fell by 12,000 over the year.

 

Former state lawmaker Edgar “Sonny” Mouton, an adviser to two governors, has died.  Delhomme Funeral Home confirmed Mouton died Thursday. He was 86.

Visitation for Mouton is scheduled today and tomorrow at the funeral home in Lafayette and the funeral will be tomorrow at 1 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

 

A PART-TIME PASTOR IN LAKE CHARLES IS WORKING TO ORGANIZE A FAMILY PROMISE NETWORK FOR CALCASIEU PARISH, WHICH WOULD HELP KEEP HOMELESS FAMILIES TOGETHER.  VINCE ENDRIS OF FIRST CHRISTIAN DISCIPLES OF CHRIST SAYS THERE ARE CURRENTLY HOMELESS SHELTERS FOR MEN ONLY AND FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN ONLY IN THE PARISH, BUT THERE ARE NONE FOR FAMILIES.  HE SAYS THAT, ACCORDING TO THE CALCASIEU PARISH SCHOOL BOARD, THERE ARE TWO THOUSAND HOMELESS CHILDREN IN THE PARISH.  HE SAYS THE PURPOSE OF A FAMILY PROMISE MISSION IS TO HELP HOMELESS AND LOW INCOME FAMILIES TO ACHIEVE SUSTAINABLE INDEPENDENCE AND THEY NEED 13 OTHER CHURCHES TO JOIN THE MOVEMENT.

 

AN AUDIT REVEALS THAT MORE THAN 25-HUNDRED DOLLARS WAS STOLEN FROM WASHINGTON TOWN HALL. THE ST. LANDRY PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS INVESTIGATING.  THE AUDIT INDICATED THAT SOMEONE WHO COLLECTED AND LOGGED PAYMENTS DID NOT DEPOSIT ALL OF THE MONEY.  THE MONEY WAS STOLEN THIS LAST FALL OVER THE PERIOD OF ONE MONTH.

 

EARLY VOTING FOR THE APRIL NINTH ELECTION BEGAN LAST FRIDAY AND CONTINUES THROUGH THIS SATURDAY.  EARLY VOTING HOURS ARE 8-30 A-M TO SIX P-M EACH DAY AT THE REGISTRAR OF VOTER’S OFFICES IN EACH PARISH.  IN CROWLEY, VOTERS WILL DECIDE WHO REPLACED K-P GIBSON AS POLICE CHIEF.  JIMMY BROUSSARD AND SCOTT FOGELMAND FACE OFF IN THE RUNOFF ELECTION.
