SOME CALCASIEU PARISH STUDENTS ARE HELPING WITH A WORLD WAR TWO EXHIBIT THAT IS COMING TO LAKE CHARLES LATER THIS YEAR. STUDENTS IN THE CALCASIEU PARISH SCHOOL BOARD’S TELEVISION PRODUCTION CLASS ARE TAPING INTERVIEWS WITH MILITARY VETERANS OF WORLD WAR TWO AS WELL AS HISTORIANS. KPLC TV ANCHOR BRITNEY GLASER, WHO IS THEIR INSTRUCTOR, SAYS THE STUDENTS HAVE REALLY HAD THEIR EYES OPENED WHEN TALKING TO THE VETERANS WHO CHOSE TO GO TO WAR. THE EXHIBIT TITLED “PELICAN STATE GOES TO WAR” WILL BE ON EXHIBIT AT HISTORIC CITY HALL FROM AUGUST SECOND THROUGH SEPTEMBER 28TH.
NINE HORSES FROM ACADIA PARISH THAT WERE SEVERELY MALNOURISHED WERE BROUGHT TO THE ST. LANDRY PARISH ANIMAL SHELTER LAST WEEK, WHERE THEY ARE BEGINNING TO RECOVER. SHELTER DIRECTOR STACEY ALLEMAN TELLS THE DAILY ADVERTISTER SHE KNEW THEY WERE IN BAD SHAPE WHEN THE NINE ARRIVED IN A TRAILER THAT USUALLY ACCOMODATES NO MORE THAN FOUR OR FIVE HORSES. SHE SAYS THE HORSES WERE VERY EXCITED WHEN THEY SAW FOOD AND, FOR ABOUT 48 HOURS, THEY STAYED IN FRONT OF THE HAY. THE OWNER OF THE HORSES, 24-YEAR-OLD TRAMAINE MARKS OF CHURCH POINT, WAS CHARGED ONE WEEK AGO WITH NINE FELONY COUNTS OF ANIMAL CRUELTY AND THREE COUNTS OF LIVESTOCK AT LARGE.
Louisiana lawmakers are receiving a $3.8 billion public school financing proposal that includes pay raises for teachers and support staff, in a package of $140 million spending increases. Gov. John Bel Edwards has recommended the spending hikes. The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education unanimously backed the proposal Wednesday, a day after giving it preliminary support. Lawmakers can support or reject it, but cannot change the formula.
Two men have been arrested in a weekend shooting death in Lafayette. The Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office told news outlets that 23-year-old Maximilian Trautmann and 32-year-old Sean Perroncel have been arrested in the investigation.
Trautmann is charged with second-degree murder, while Perroncel is charged as an accessory after the fact of second-degree murder. Deputies were called Saturday morning and found the body of 25-year-old Pernell Boudreaux.
THE SULPHUR CITY COUNCIL PASSED AN ORDINANCE INCREASING THE FINES FOR COMMERCIAL TRUCKS THAT TRAVEL ON STREETS WITH “NO THRU TRUCK” SIGNS. COUNCILWOMAN MANDY THOMAS TELLS KPLC TV THAT TRUCK TRAFFIC HAS GOTTEN WORSE SINCE CONSTRUCTION BEGAN ON THE I-210 BRIDGE ESPECIALLY ON MAPLEWOOD DRIVE. THE OLD FINE WAS BETWEEN 100 AND 500 DOLLARS BUT NOW THE MINIMUM FINE WILL BE 500 DOLLARS GOING UP TO A MAXIMUM OF ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. SHE SAYS COMMERCIAL TRUCKS WHO HAVE BUSINESS IN THE AREA WILL BE EXEMPTED FROM THE FINES.

A former Louisiana prison warden has pleaded guilty to federal charges. Former Avoyelles Correctional Center warden Nathan Cain’s plea on Wednesday ended a trial that began Monday in Alexandria. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says the 51-year-old Cain pleaded guilty to wire fraud in a case involving his ex-wife, Tonia Bandy Cain, the former manager of the prison’s business office. Tonia Cain pleaded guilty in July to wire fraud conspiracy and awaits sentencing.
