ABBEVILLE HIGH SCHOOL WAS EVACUATED YESTERDAY BECAUSE OF A BOMB THREAT.  VERMILLION PARISH SCHOOL BOARD PRESIDENT KIBBIE P. PILLETTE SAYS THERE WERE ALSO THREATS OF SHOOTINGS.  HE SAYS POLICE FELT THE THREAT WAS SOMEWHAT CREDIBLE.  POLICE AND K-9 UNITS SWEPT THE BUILDING AND FOUND NOTHING.

 

THE LOUISIANA LEGISLATIVE AUDITOR’S OFFICE HAS CONFIRMED THAT THEY ARE INVESTIGATING THE CALCASIEU PARISH DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE BUT THEY ARE NOT SAYING WHY.  SPOKESWOMAN PATSY DUGAS CONFIRMED TO K-P-L-C-T-V THAT TWO MEMBERS OF THE LEGISLATIVE AUDITOR’S OFFICE WERE AT DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE LAST WEEK BUT REFERRED ANY OTHER QUESTIONS TO THE AUDITOR’S OFFICE.  KATC AND JIM HUMMEL REVEALED LAST FALL THAT HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF GIFT CARDS WERE FUNNELED THROUGH THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY’S OFFICE.  CERTAIN DEFENDANTS WERE ALLOWED TO BUY THE GIFT CARDS IN EXCHANGE FOR GETTING OUT OF COURT-ORDERED COMMUNITY SERVICE.

 

A Louisiana resident has tested positive for the new coronavirus and is being treated at a New Orleans hospital. Gov. John Bel Edwards said Monday that the patient is from Jefferson Parish, a New Orleans suburb. Edwards told lawmakers about the case Monday afternoon as Louisiana’s legislative session opened. He said people “must take action individually” to help prevent the spread of the virus, but he also urged calm.

 

Louisiana has opened its three-month legislative session with uncertainty about how the House and Senate’s more conservative bent will change lawmaking and how the new coronavirus risk will impact the state. Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards spoke to a joint session of the majority-Republican House and Senate. He’s urging new spending investments across education levels. And he’ll again try his long shot bids to raise Louisiana’s minimum wage and enact new equal pay laws.

 

THE SEASON IS OVER FOR THE U-L LAFAYETTE RAGIN’ CAJUNS MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM.  THEY LOST LAST NIGHT IN THE SECOND ROUND OF THE SUN BELT CONFERENCE MEN’S BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS.  THE RAGIN CAJUNS WERE UP BY TEN POINTS WITH UNDER SEVEN MINUTES TO PLAY BUT GEORGIA SOUTHERN RALLIED FOR AN EIGHTY-TWO TO EIGHT-ONE VICTORY.

U-L HAD A DISAPPOINTING SEASON FINISHING WITH A RECORD OF FIFTEEN WINS AGAINST NINETEEN DEFEATS.

 

A ST. MARTINVILLE MAN WHO WAS REPORTED MISSING WAS FOUND DEAD IN HIS HOME LAST NIGHT.  PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER ADAM TOUCHET OF THE ST. MARTINVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT SAYS THAT, DURING THE INITIAL MISSING PERSON INVESTIGATION ON SUNDAY, INVESTIGATORS DEEMED ALFRED BATISTE’S TRAILER HOME CONDEMNED.  A WELFARE CHECK WAS PERFORMED ON A FAMILY MEMBER WHO WAS REPORTEDLY LIVING WITH BATISTE AND THAT’S WHEN THEY FOUND THE BODY OF BATISTE IN A BACK BEDROOM.  HE SAYS ST. MARTINVILLE POLICE ARE TREATING THE CASE AS OPEN UNTIL THEY GET THE RESULTS OF AN AUTOPSY.

 

Authorities in Louisiana say a man high on drugs apparently wanted to take a ride so he called his local sheriff’s office. Jeff Davis Parish Sheriff’s officials say 32-year-old Charles Ray Stevens was arrested Saturday and charged with criminal mischief. Deputies say someone called the 911 emergency center four times and made short comments and said he “wanted to take a ride.” Deputies went to the caller’s house and spoke with a woman who said her fiance had been smoking marijuana laced with PCP and he was hallucinating.
