State lawmakers appear close to agreement on new boundary lines for Louisiana’s six congressional districts. As the special redistricting session of the Legislature nears its end, it remains unlikely that Louisiana lawmakers will do anything to alter the balance of power in the U. S. House. The proposed maps, while accounting for loss of population in north Louisiana, keep districts very similar to their current configuration. On Thursday, some central Louisiana senators pushed for a plan that won’t divide Rapides Parish.

THREE ACADIANA PARISHES ARE PARTICIPATING IN A PILOT PROGRAM THAT WILL CHANGE THE WAY SENTENCES ARE HANDED OUT FOR D-W-I OFFENDERS.  UNDER THE PROGRAM, FIRST OR SECOND OFFENSE D-W-I CONVICTIONS IN ACADIA, LAFAYETTE AND VERMILLION PARISHES WILL REQUIRE THE OFFENDER TO UNDERGO A SCREENING THROUGH THE COMPUTERIZED ASSESSMENT AND REFERRAL SYSTEM, OR CARS, AS A CONDITION FOR PROBATION.  THE CARS SCREENING IS SUPPOSED TO HELP JUDGES IN DETERMINING THE OFFENDERS’ TREATMENT NEEDS, WITH THE GOAL OF REDUCING THE LIKELIHOOD OF A SUBSEQUENT D-W-I VIOLATION.  RECENT STATISTICS SHOW THAT FORTY PERCENT OF VEHICLE FATALITIES IN LOUISIANA WERE ALCOHOL-RELATED.
