THEIRRY.  HE WAS APPOINTED HEAD OF THE LAFAYETTE CITY DEPARTMENT RESPONSIBLE FOR CULTURE, RECREATION AND PARKS, AND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS.  WHEN FORMER MAYOR DUDLEY LASTRAPES NAMED HIM TO THE POST, THIERRY BECAME THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN DIRECTOR OF A LAFAYETTE CITY DEPARTMENT WITH A MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET.  A FUNERAL MASS TAKES PLACE TOMORROW MORNING AT ELEVEN AT ST. PIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH.

TWO LAKE CHARLES MEN HAVE BEEN ARRESTED FOR INTENTIONALLY SETTING FIRE TO AN OCCUPIED MOBILE HOME IN WESTLAKE BY SHOOTING FLARES AT IT.  THE MOBILE HOME ON PHILLIPS STREET SUFFERED MINIMAL DAMAGE.  IT WAS LATER DETERMINED THAT ONE OF THE MEN, NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD DYLAN GUILLORY, WAS THE EXBOYFRIEND OF A GIRL WHO LIVED IN THE MOBILE HOME.  IN AN INTERVIEW WITH CALCASIEU PARISH SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES, GUILLORY AND NINETEEN-YEAR-OLD CHRISTIAN BISHOP ADMITTED TO SHOOTING FLARES AT THE MOBILE HOME AND THEY HAVE BEEN CHARGED WITH AGGRAVATED ARSON.

 

Gov. John Bel Edwards has created a study group aimed at identifying and responding to the decline in Louisiana’s rural communities. Population in the state’s rural areas has dwindled amid problems with job creation, infrastructure and education systems. The Democratic governor Friday signed an executive order establishing a Governor’s Advisory Council on Rural Revitalization. The 34-member panel is charged with determining the needs of rural communities on a long list of issues and finding financing options to help address the problems.

 

LAFAYETTE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING THE ATEMPTED THEFT OF AN ATM AT A BANK OVER THE WEEKEND.  POLICE SAY IT HAPPENED AT THE CHASE BANK IN THE FIFTY-FIVE HUNDRED BLOCK OF JOHNSTON STREET NEAR THE RIDGE ROAD INTERSECTION.  MAJOR DAMAGE WAS DONE TO THE MACHINE BUT POLICE SAY THE ROBBERS LEFT WITHOUT GETTING ANY CASH.  ANYONE WITH INFORMATION IS ASKED TO CONTACT CRIME STOPPERS OR YOUR LOCAL POLICE DEPARTMENT.

 

A VEHICLE BELONGING TO AN 89-YEAR-OLD MAN, WHO HAS BEEN MISSING SINCE WEDNESDAY EVENING, WAS FOUND STUCK IN A FIELD NEAR MERMENTAU IN ACADIA PARISH.  JAMES GUNNELS JUNIOR, WHO SUFFERS FROM DEMENTIA, WAS STAYING IN AN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY IN ALEXANDRIA.  GUNNELS IS WHITE, BALD, FIVE FEET ELEVEN INCHES AND ONE HUNDRED EIGHTY POUNDS, AND HE WAS LAST SEEN WEARING BLACK JEANS AND A CHARCOAL GRAY HOODIE.  STATE POLICE HAVE ISSUED A SILVER ALERT AND ANYONE WHO SPOTS HIM IS ASKED TO CONTACT THE ACADIA PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE OR THE ALEXANDRIA POLICE DEPARTMENT.

 

Port officials in Lake Charles are hailing $46 million in federal funding that is going toward a project designed to improve navigation to port facilities in Lake Charles. The American Press reports the money for the Calcasieu River and Pass Project was included in the Army Corps of Engineers’ plan that was announced Tuesday. Port of Lake Charles Director Bill Rase told the newspaper that it was a “big deal for the community.”
