A Washington company has asked for federal permits for a $4.5 billion liquefied natural gas export plant in southwest Louisiana. It would be the third plant planned along the Calcasieu Ship Channel.  The American Press reports that executives of Venture Global LNG are expected to describe their plans at noon Wednesday in the Cameron Parish Police Jury meeting room.  The plant would be called VG Calcasieu Pass.

State police say a cyclist was killed when a truck hit him as he rode on a highway in St. Landry Parish.  Joseph Norman, 55, of Opelousas was killed Saturday shortly after 5:30 p.m. on Louisiana Highway 357, according to state police. Troopers say he was riding a bicycle with no helmet, no lights or reflective clothing and was struck from behind by a truck driven by 69-year-old Joseph Thibodeaux of Prairieville.  Authorities say Norman was thrown from his bicycle and died.

THE U-S ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY IS CONSIDERING LOWERING THE CURRENT OZONE STANDARD FROM THE CURRENT 75 PARTS PER BILLION TO BETWEEN 65 AND 70 PARTS PER BILLION.  IF THEY LOWER IT TO 65 PARTS PER BILLION, LAFAYETTE WOULD NO LONGER BE IN COMPLIANCE.  BECAUSE THERE ARE RELATIVELY FEW SMOKESTACK INDUSTRIES IN LAFAYETTE, LOCAL OFFICIALS WOULD LOOK AT LOWERING VEHICLE POLLUTION.  KEVIN BLANCHARD, THE CHIEF DEVELOPMENT OFFICER FOR THE LAFAYETTE CONSOLIDATED GOVERNMENT, TELLS THE ADVOCATE THAT WOULD LIKELY MEAN PUTTING MORE RESTRICTIONS ON ENGINE IDLING BY GOVERNMENT VEHICLES AND INCREASING BIKE LANES.

Rep. Bill Cassidy’s defeat of Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu in a weekend runoff in Louisiana ended up a bit closer than some polls forecast.  But the Republican wave was still enough Saturday to give the Baton Rouge congressman an easy 12-point victory. It was a stark contrast to Landrieu’s three previous victories, all competitive wins for the New Orleans Democrat.  This time, Cassidy won 49 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes.

Republican Bill Cassidy says he will use his new Louisiana Senate seat to continue fighting President Barack Obama’s policies.  But the man who defeated Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu in a runoff Saturday isn’t offering many detailed policy alternatives.  Still, Cassidy said on Fox News Sunday that Republicans are best for working-class Americans. Democratic policies on health care, energy and immigration are wrong and kill jobs, he added.
