EMERGENCY CREWS ARE ON SCENE AT THE SOUHPORT SUBDIVISION AREA WHERE A TORNADO REPORTLY TOUCHED DOWN THIS MORNING.  NEW IBERIA POLICE, ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE, SAY SEVERAL HOMES WERE DAMAGED AND PEOPLE ARE TRAPPED.  RESCUE EFFORTS ARE UNDERWAY AND CIVILIANS ARE ADVISED TO STAY CLEAR OF THE AREA.  MEANWHILE, KATC METEOROLIGIST ROB PERILLO HAS POSTED VIDEO OF A TORNADO AT THE PORT OF IBERIA ALSO THIS MORNING.

 

STATE OFFICES ARE CLOSED IN TWELVE PARISHES.  COMMISSIONER OF ADMINISTRATION JAY DARDENNE SAYS THE CLOSURE IS BECAUSE OF THE ANTICIPATED SEVERE WEATHER.  THREE OF THE PARISHES ARE IN ACADIANA– LAFAYETTE, SAINT MARTIN AND SAINT LANDRY PARISHES.  ALL AGENCY HEADS WILL DETERMINE WHO ARE ESSENTIAL EMPLOYEES WHO SHOULD REPORT TO OR REMAIN ON DUTY OR REPORT TO ALTERNATE WORK SITES.

 

TREV FAULK HAS RESIGNED AS HEAD COACH OF THE LAFAYETTE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY FOOTBALL TEAM.  IN HIS SEVEN YEARS WITH THE PROGRAM, HE HAS LED THEM TO FOUR STATE TITLES AND TWO OTHER STATE CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES.  THE SCHOOL MADE THE ANNOUNCEMENT IN A LETTER TO PARENTS.  PASTOR JAY MILLER SAID FAULK HAS BEEN PREPARING TO EXPLORE OPPORTUNITIES THAT HE FEELS HE NEEDS TO PURSUE NOW.

 

RUMORS OF A SHOOTING ON CAMPUS LED TO A LOCKDOWN AT NEW IBERIA SENIOR HIGH YESTERDAY.  POLICE AND SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS CONDUCTED A SEARCH BUT FOUND NO WEAPONS AND THERE WERE NO INJURIES REPORTED.  THIS IS THE SECOND LOCKDOWN AT THE SCHOOL IN AS MANY DAYS.  ON MONDAY, THE SCHOOL WAS PLACED ON LOCKDOWN AFTER REPORTS OF A GUN ON CAMPUS, WHICH WAS FOUND AFTER A SEARCH.

 

CALCASIEU PARISH SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES ARRESTED A STUDENT AT STARKS HIGH SCHOOL MONDAY FOR ALLEGEDLY THREATENING A TEACHER.  DETECTIVES LEARNED DURING AN INVESTIGATION THAT A FOURTEEN-YEAR-OLD STUDENT THREATENED TO BOMB A TEACHER’S HOUSE.  THE THREAT WAS MADE DURING CLASS.  THE STUDENT WAS BOOKED INTO THE JUVENILE DETENTION CENTER ON A CHARGE OF COMMUNICATING FALSE INFORMATION OF A PLANNED ARSON.

 

EMPLOYEES AT A LAFAYETTE RESTAURANT HELD A ROBBERY SUSPECT UNTIL POLICE ARRIVED.  POLICE SAY THAT AT AROUND ONE-THIRTY P-M, THE SUSPECT BEGAN TAKING MONEY OUT OF A REGISTER AT THE RESTAURANT, LOCATED IN THE SIXTEEN HUNDRED BLOCK OF ERASTE LANDRY.  THE EMPLOYEES CONFRONTED AND HELD HIM.  FORTY-YEAR-OLD JAMES BEARB JUNIOR OF LAFAYETTE WAS CHARGED WITH SIMPLE ROBBERY AND SIMPLE BATTERY.

 

A RIBBON CUTTING WAS HELD YESTERDAY FOR A NEW BUSINESS VENTURE FOR TONY CHACHERE’S…TONY’S COUNTRY STORE, LOCATED ON THE I-FORTY-NINE NORTH SERVICE ROAD IN OPELOUSAS.  MANY DIGNITARIES WERE ON HAND INCLUDING FAMILY AND EMPLOYEES AS WELL AS FORMER SAINTS WIDE RECEIVER AND OPELOUSAS NATIVE DEVERY HENDERSON.  TONY’S GREAT GRANDAUGHTER, CELESTE CHACHERIE, WHO IS THE DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND PUBLIC RELATIONS, SAYS THE STORE IS A COMBINATION OF A GIFT SHOP AND A TOURISM EXPERIENCE.  THEY SELL COMPANY PRODUCTS AND MERCHANDISE AND THERE’S A MOVIE THEATRE IN THE STORE THAT GIVES THE HISTORY OF THE BUSINESS AND LOUISIANA CULTURE.

 

THE CITY OF RAYNE HAS ANNOUNCED A CITY-WIDE POWER OUTAGE PLANNED FOR THIS SUNDAY.  IT WILL TAKE PLACE BETWEEN SEVEN AND TEN IN THE MORNING.  THE OUTAGE IS PLANNED SO CREWS CAN REPLACE A MAIN SERVICE POLE AT THE SOUTH FROG SUBSTATION, LOCATED AT HIGHWAY NINETY AND THIRD STREET.  IF SERVICE IS NOT RESTORED BY ELEVEN A-M, RESIDENTS ARE ASKED TO CALL THREE-THREE-FOUR-SIXTY-SIX-THIRTY-ONE.
