THE LAWYER FOR FORMER U-L SOFTBALL COACH MICHAEL LOTIEF HAS PROMISED LEGAL ACTION AGAINST THE UNIVERSITY AFTER THEY RELEASED THE FINDINGS OF AN INVESTIGATIVE REPORT TO THE PUBLIC.  ATTORNEY GLENN MCELLIGOTT JUNIOR SAYS IN A NEWS RELEASE THAT THEY ASKED THE UNIVERSITY TO PROVIDE THEM A COPY OF THE REPORT BEFORE RELEASING IT SO THEY COULD PREPARE A REBUTTAL.  THE REPORT SAYS LOTIEF SUBJECTED THE PLAYERS AND STAFF TO VIOLENT AND VULGAR LANGUAGE AS WELL AS VERBAL AND PHYSICAL ASSAULT, WHICH CREATED A HOSTILE LEARNING AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT.  MCELLIGOTT SAYS THE REPORT IS FILLED WITH HALF-TRUTHS AND MISSTATEMENTS IN ORDER TO JUSTIFY FIRING LOTIEF.

 

SULPHUR POLICE HAVE ARRESTED A TEENAGER FOR SHOOTING AND KILLING A MAN SATURDAY AFTERNOON IN THE 13-HUNDRED BLOCK OF SOUTH POST OAK ROAD.  24-YEAR-OLD DAVID REED THE THIRD OF SULPHUR WAS THE VICTIM, WHO WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL BY OFFICERS AND LATER PRONOUNCED DEAD.  WITNESSES TOLD POLICE THAT 17-YEAR-OLD BLAKE POULLARD OF LAKE CHARLES WAS THE SHOOTER.  HE WAS LATER FOUND AT AN APARTMENT COMPLEX IN SULPHUR.  HE WAS ARRESTED WITHOUT INCIDENT AND CHARGED WITH SECOND DEGREE MURDER.

 

A MOTORCYCLIST WAS EJECTED FROM HIS VEHICLE BY A HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER SATURDAY NIGHT AND THEN STRUCK BY A SECOND VEHICLE.  BROOKS DAVID WITH THE STATE POLICE SAYS THE DRIVER OF A MAROON OLDSMOBILE TURNED INTO THE PATH OF THE MOTORCYCLIST ON L-A 94 IN ST. MARTIN PARISH AT AROUND 10-30.  AFTER HE WAS EJECTED, A SECOND VEHICLE STRUCK THE MOTORCYCLIST WHILE A THIRD VEHICLE HIT THE BIKE BEFORE IT CAME TO REST.  THE MOTORCYCLIST WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE HE IS LISTED IN SERIOUS CONDITION.

 

Former Republican state lawmaker John Schroder has won the race to serve as Louisiana’s state treasurer.  Schroder defeated a Democrat, Derrick Edwards, according to complete, unofficial returns from Saturday’s runoff.  Edwards is a lawyer with an accounting degree.  The two candidates were vying to fill the seat vacated by John Kennedy, a Republican who left the job after winning election to the U.S. Senate.

THE CALCASIEU PARISH POLICE JURY HAS A PROGRAM THAT HELPS SENIOR CITIZENS ON FIXED INCOMES.  THERE ARE 16 LOCATIONS AROUND THE PARISH THAT PROVIDES EACH PERSON WITH A 40 TO 50 POUND BOX FILLED WITH NUTRITIONAL, EASY TO COOK FOODS FROM CATHOLIC CHARITIES.  ANYONE OVER THE AGE OF SIXTY CAN PICK UP A BOX ON THE THIRD FRIDAY OF EACH MONTH.  PROGRAM ORGANIZERS SAY THEY COULD USE MORE HELP FROM LOCAL RESIDENTS, AND IF YOU’D LIKE TO FIND OUT MORE, YOU CAN CALL 721-40-20.

 

IBERIA PARISH DEPUTIES ARE SEARCHING FOR A DARK GMC VEHICLE WITH A DARK STRIPE THAT MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN A SHOOTING IN NEIGHBORHOOD IN NEW IBERIA FRIDAY NIGHT.  TWO MEN AND TWO WOMEN WERE SHOT IN THE 900 BLOCK OF MISSISSIPPI STREET AND DEPUTIES TOOK THEM TO THE HOSPITAL TO BE TREATED FOR NON-LIFE THREATENING WOUNDS.  LT. ROBERT MOORE SAYS WITNESSES, WHO WERE WITH THE VICTIMS, REFUSED TO GIVE STATEMENTS TO LAW ENFORCEMENT.  IN THAT SAME NEIGHBORHOOD ON WEDNESDAY, THERE WERE SHOOTINGS THAT LEFT ONE MAN DEAD AND TWO OTHERS WOUNDED.

 

Unemployment fell for the sixth straight month in Louisiana, but payrolls moved in the wrong direction in October.  The jobless rate fell to 4.8 percent in October from 5.1 percent in September, as more people entered the labor force and more found jobs. Louisiana’s unemployment rate was 6.1 percent a year ago.  About 100,000 Louisianans were jobless, down more than 5,000 from September.
