The chief executives in charge of running state hospitals in seven cities have gotten together to fight the possibility of losing some of the public money they’re paid.

The News-Star reports that the executives say in a joint letter that cuts could have dire consequences for some of Louisiana’s most vulnerable residents.  Their companies are paid to run the former charity system privatized by Gov. Bobby Jindal.  Last week, state Health and Hospitals Secretary Kathy Kliebert told the Senate Finance Committee that the contracts may have to be restructured.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office says two teenagers from the town of Iowa are dead after a crash in Lake Charles.  Spokeswoman Kim Myers says both 15-year-old Caleb Broussard and 18-year-old Robert Pyle were passengers in a pickup truck that apparently ran a stop sign and collided with an SUV.  She says both vehicles overturned Saturday night in a nearby pasture.  Myers says the investigation is continuing and charges may be filed.

Delinquent taxpayers have one last shot to pay what they owe with lessened penalties and interest charges.  The state revenue department announced Monday that Louisiana’s latest tax amnesty period begins Nov. 16 and runs through Dec. 15. It’s the third year in a row Louisiana is offering amnesty to those who haven’t paid what they owe, and it’s the last amnesty allowed for a decade.  State lawmakers authorized the amnesty periods to help drum up money for the state’s budget.
