ATTORNEYS FOR THE LAFAYETTE CONSOLIDATED GOVERNMENT SAY THEY DON’T HAVE ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY THE MANDATED COSTS OF JAIL OPERATIONS AND MAINTENANCE AND THAT THOSE COSTS ARE NOT REASONABLE.  THEIR REMARKS WERE IN RESPONSE TO A LAWSUIT BY LAFAYETTE PARISH SHERIFF MARK GARBER OVER PARISH JAIL EXPENSES.  THE ATTORNEYS FOR THE CONSOLIDATED GOVERNMENT SAY THAT IF THEY WERE TO PAY THE AMOUNT THE SHERIFF WANTS, IT WOULD DEPLETE THE COURTHOUSE COMPLEX FUND IN THREE YEARS OR LESS.  GARBER SUED THE CITY-PARISH GOVERNMENT IN OCTOBER ASKING THE FIFTEENTH JUDICIAL DISTRICT COURT TO DETERMINE HOW MUCH THEY HAVE TO PAY FOR THE COSTS OF THE LAFAYETTE PARISH CORRECTIONAL CENTER.

 

An appellate court has upheld the convictions of sentences of a man who broke into a Lake Charles home and recorded himself raping a female at gunpoint.  The American Press reports part of the video was played for jurors at the 2017 trial of 23-year-old Javonta Jermel Harrison. He was convicted of aggravated rape, armed robbery with a firearm and aggravated burglary. He was sentenced to concurrent terms of life imprisonment, 104 years’ imprisonment and 30 years’ imprisonment.

 

THERE’S BEEN ANOTHER CASE OF CHURCH VANDALISM IN CROWLEY.  SOMEONE THREW A MARBLE SLAB INTO A GLASS DOOR AT FIRST LUTHERAN CHURCH.  THAT SAME CHURCH WAS THE VICTIM IN THE FIRST CASE OF VANDALISM BACK IN JULY WHEN SOMEONE THREW A PADLOCK INTO A STAINED GLASS WINDOW.  FOUR OTHER CHURCHES WERE VANDALIZED IN OCTOBER.

 

Many of Louisiana’s state government websites and email systems are shut down because of what the governor’s office says is an attempted ransomware attack.  The problem Monday disrupted business operations and online services across state agencies. It happened two days after Louisiana’s election for governor, when the Secretary of State’s website was a vital link for information.  Gov. John Bel Edwards’ office says some services started returning Monday afternoon. But it could take days to restore all websites and online operations.

SOME RESIDENTS IN ELTON ARE RAISING CONCERNS AFTER THEY LEARNED THAT A HALFWAY HOUSE WILL BE GOING UP ON SECOND STREET NEAR ELTON HIGH SCHOOL.  A NUMBER OF RESIDENTS TELL KLFY TV THAT THEY WERE CONCERNED WITH THE LOCATION AND NOT HAVING BEEN TOLD ABOUT IT.  ASH CASSIDY, THE OWNER OF THE HALFWAY HOUSE, WHICH WILL BE KNOWN AS RAISED TO LIFE MINISTRIES, SAYS THE MEN WHO COME TO THE HALFWAY HOUSE WILL HAVE DEALT IN THE PAST WITH DRUG OR ALCOHOL ISSUES BUT THEY WILL BE CLEAN FROM DRUGS.  HE SAYS IT’S A PLACE OF DISCIPLESHIP FOR MEN WHO’VE HAD ISSUES IN THEIR LIFE AND WANT TO SEEK HELP BEYOND THEMSELVES.

 

TWO OF SEVEN JUVENILES WHO ESCAPED SUNDAY NIGHT FROM THE ACADIANA CENTER FOR YOUTH IN AVOYELLES PARISH ARE STILL ON THE LOOSE.  BUNKIE POLICE CHIEF SCOTT FERGUSON SAYS BETWEEN TEN AND TWELVE JUVENILES OVERPOWERED A GUARD AND ATTEMPTED TO CLIMB A FENCE TO ESCAPE AND SEVEN WERE SUCCESSFUL.  TWO OF THE ESCAPEES WERE CAUGHT WITHIN A MILE OF THE FACILITY, TWO MORE WERE APPREHENDED AT STELLY’S TRUCK STOP IN LEBEAU EARLY MONDAY MORNING AND A FIFTH WAS FOUND MONDAY MORNING AT AROUND EIGHT IN OPELOUSAS.  POLICE ARE LOOKING FOR A BROWN 2010 LINCOLN M-K-S THAT WAS STOLEN POSSIBLY BY THE REMAINING ESCAPEES.

 

Louisiana has reported its first death from vaping-related lung injury.  The Louisiana Department of Health says the person who died was among 30 people in Louisiana with the ailment ranging in age from 17 to 71.  The agency says privacy laws keep it from releasing information about the person who died.  Investigators with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention haven’t found a single device, ingredient or additive in common among more than 2,000 illnesses reported nationwide since March.
