YESTERDAY LAFAYETTE POLICE ARRESTED A SPECIAL ED TEACHER IN THE LAFAYETTE PARISH SCHOOL SYSTEM AFTER A FIVE-YEAR-OLD STUDENT WAS HURT IN HER CLASS TUESDAY.  THE PARENTS OF THE STUDENT, WHO HAS DOWN SYNDROME, TELL KLFY TEN NEWS THAT THEY WERE TOLD THE TEACHER, 47-YEAR-OLD NICOLE LANDRY, KICKED THEIR SON IN THE HEAD.  A PRESS RELEASE FROM THE LAFAYETTE POLICE DEPARTMENT SAYS LANDRY HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH SIMPLE BATTERY AND THE INVESTIGTION IS ONGOING.  THE PARENTS, JASON AND DETRA WILLIS, SAY THEY ARE UPSET BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT TOLD ABOUT THE INCIDENT UNTIL AFTER SCHOOL HAD LET OUT ON TUESDAY.

 

The Calcasieu parish sheriff’s office says a Texas motorcycle gang leader and six associates are accused in ATM thefts from two Louisiana banks.  The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that 44-year-old Michael Cupp of Dayton, Texas, was arrested Tuesday in Liberty County, Texas, on a racketeering charge with bond set at $15,000. A sheriff’s office news release says he’s leader of the Brothers East Outlaw Motorcycle Gang.  The ATM thefts were in Westlake on July 13 and August 3, in which more than $150,000 was taken.

 

Eleven young endangered whooping cranes are in southwest Louisiana, being prepared to join 69 adults in the wild.  The juveniles will spend about two weeks in a net-covered pen at the White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area near Gueydan.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries biologist Sara Zimorski said Thursday that they’ll be counted as part of the flock once they’re released to a bigger uncovered pen, around November 25.  She says the department will provide supplemental food into January.

 

A 2-year-old Great Dane, shot twice in the head in Lafayette, is now recovering at a volunteer animal shelter in Mississippi.  The Vicksburg Post reports the dog named Riley was shot about eight months ago and rushed to a veterinarian by a witness. Blind in one eye that’s backed by a bullet and partially blind in the other eye, Riley is still in recovery. She is now being cared for at Helping Animals Reach Tomorrow, a Vicksburg shelter that is trying to help her recover from malnourishment and prepare for adoption.

 

A NEW LAKE CHARLES BASED APP, OFFERING SAME DAY DELIVERY ON A VARIETY OF ITEMS FROM LOCAL STORES, WILL BE LAUNCHED IN EARLY 2020.  THIS WEEK, A VERSION OF THE APP, GOPHR DIRECT, WAS RELEASED FOR LOCAL BUSINESSES.  GOPHR IS SPELLED G-O-P-H-R.  THE COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR FOR GOPHR, DRIA WALDROUP, SAYS A CUSTOMER WOULD PLACE AN ORDER WITH A STORE, THE STORE WOULD CONTACT THEM, AND A DRIVER WOULD COME PICK UP THE ITEM AND DELIVER IT.  GOPHR WILL DELIVER TO ANYONE FROM CAMERON TO DERIDDER AND FROM VINTON TO JENNINGS.
