THE OWNER OF DON’S SPECIALTY MEATS IN CARENCRO SAYS HE WILL REBUILD AFTER HIS STORE WAS DESTROYED BY A FIRE SUNDAY MORNING.  DURING PREPARATIONS FOR SUNDAY LUNCHES, AN EMPLOYEE NOTICED SMOKE COMING FROM THE ROOF NEAR THE BARBEQUE PIT AREA.  IT TOOK FIREFIGHTERS FROM CARENCRO, DUSON AND ST. LANDRY PARISH LESS THAN AN HOUR TO GET THE FIRE UNDER CONTROL.  LAFAYETTE FIRE CHIEF ALTON TRAHAN HAS RULED THE FIRE ACCIDENTAL.

 

A PLANE CRASHED SATURDAY AFTERNOON IN JENNINGS NEAR THE STEARMAN FLY-IN EVENT.  ORGANIZERS SAY THE PLANE WAS NOT PART OF THE EVENT, BUT HAPPENED TO CRASH NEARBY.  THE F-A-A SAYS THE CRASH, WHICH HAPPENED SHORTLY AFTER TAKE OFF, IS UNDER INVESTIGATION.  THE PILOT WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL, BUT THERE’S BEEN NO WORD ON HIS OR HER’S CONDITION.

 

In the fallout from a scandal at the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, Iberia Parish prosecutors have tossed out more than 100 pending criminal cases involving affected deputies.  And a review of court records by The Advocate shows that some defendants who had been convicted have won new trials or dismissals after raising the issue of the deputies’ reliability.  Sheriff Louis Ackal is fighting federal charges in the beatings of inmates and suspects that prosecutors say he encouraged or ignored. However, nine deputies have pleaded guilty to allegations of abuse.

 

Louisiana officials say the Federal Emergency Management Agency has activated a loan program for local governments affected by the August floods.  The agency also has approved more than $128 million in grants for a “shelter at home” program for people rebuilding damaged residences.  Gov. John Bel Edwards announced the activation of the Community Disaster Loan Program in a Friday news release. He said money loaned through the program will help local governments carry on government functions and meet disaster-related needs.

 

U-L POLICE HAVE ARRESTED TWO MEN IN AN ARMED ROBBERY THAT HAPPENED SEPTEMBER 25TH ON U-L’S CAMPUS NEAR THE CAJUN VILLAGE APARTMENTS.  IT WAS REPORTED THAT THREE PEOPLE WERE ROBBED AT GUNPOINT BY TWO MEN DRESSED IN DARK CLOTHING AND WEARING MASKS.  OFFICIALS SINCE DISCOVERED THAT TWO OF THE VICTIMS ALLEGEDLY STAGED THE ROBBERY OF THE THIRD MAN.  THE TWO ACCUSED OF STAGING THE ROBBERY, 19-YEAR-OLD BENNAN ANDRE ANDERSON AND 19-YEAR-OLD JACOB PAUL TIMOTHY, WERE ARRESTED, AND A SEARCH WARRANT WAS EXECUTED AT THEIR OFF CAMPUS RESIDENCE, WHERE DRUGS AND TWO HANDGUNS WERE FOUND.

STARLIGHT MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH IN DERIDDER HAD A SPECIAL CELEBRATION YESTERDAY TO MARK ITS 113TH ANNIVERSARY.  THE BEAUREGARD COMMUNITY COALITION TOOK PART IN THE CELEBRATION ALONG WITH THE CITY’S POLICE CHIEF.  A HISTORIC MARKER WAS UNVEILED OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING.  THE CHURCH AND COMMUNITY COALITION ARE WORKING TOGETHER TO GET THE CHURCH ON THE STATE’S HISTORIC REGISTER.

Gov. John Bel Edwards and Attorney General Jeff Landry appear to have worked out their latest budget dispute.  The attorney general sought to boost spending in his budget on Medicaid fraud investigations and to take money from the health department to defend Louisiana abortion laws against a lawsuit. After a Friday meeting between the two men, Edwards says he’s found a mechanism to pay for the abortion lawsuit work that doesn’t involve taking dollars from the health department. And the governor says he’s working with Landry to bolster the fraud investigation unit.
