A RECRUITING SESSION WAS HELD SATURDAY IN LAKE CHARLES FOR SECTION EIGHT LANDLORDS.  THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE ON WAITING LISTS FOR SECTION EIGHT HOUSING IN JULY.  THE RECRUITING SESSION INCLUDED THE PROCESS, EXPECTATIONS AND REWARDS OF JOINING UP.  THOSE INTERESTED IN BECOMING SECTION EIGHT LANDLORDS ARE ASKED TO CONTACT THE CALCASIEU PARISH POLICE JURY.

 

THE FATHER OF A BERWICK HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYER SAYS HE WAS KICKED OUT OF THE STADIUM AFTER HIS SON TOOK A KNEE DURING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM.  FLOYD MALVEAUX, WHO IS THE FATHER OF THE FOOTBALL PLAYER, KEYON SINGLETON, TELLS KLFY TV HE WENT DOWN TO TELL HIS SON THAT HE WAS PROUD OF HIM FOR TAKING THE KNEE, AND WHEN HE WENT BACK TO HIS SEAT, HE WAS CONFRONTED BY ANOTHER PARENT.  THE TWO GOT INTO A VERBAL ALTERCATION AND, WHEN POLICE ARRIVED, MALVEAUX SAYS, HE WAS THE ONLY ONE TOLD TO LEAVE.  MALVEAUX SAYS HIS SON TOOK THE KNEE TO PROTEST RACIAL INJUSTICES AND THE THIRD VERSE OF THE ANTHEM, WHICH HE CONSIDERS RACIST.

 

Louisiana’s education department says teachers in rural communities have too little access to training programs that help prepare them for their work in the classroom.

The department released a new report outlining the disparities.  The report says 13 percent of classes are taught by uncertified or out-of-field teachers in urban and suburban school districts, while that number grows to 21 percent in rural districts.

Also, only 9 percent of rural school districts hosted aspiring teachers through yearlong residencies under the oversight of long-time educators in the last school year. That’s compared to 39 percent in urban and suburban districts.

 

LAFAYETTE PARISH SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES HAVE MADE AN ARREST IN A HOMOCIDE IN LAFAYETTE PARISH LAST NIGHT.  DEPUTY JOHN MOWELL SAYS DEPUTIES WERE CALLED TO THE 100 BLOCK OF DEVILLIER ROAD NEAR YOUNGSVILLE AND, WHEN THEY ARRIVED, THEY LEARNED THE SUSPECTED SHOOTER HAD FLED THE AREA.  BROUSSARD POLICE FOUND THE SUSPECT AT A GAS STATION, LOCATED AT THE INTERSECTION OF HIGHWAYS 90 AND 92, NOT FAR FROM WHERE THE VICTIM’S BODY WAS FOUND.  THE VICTIM’S NAME HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED, PENDING NOTIFICATION OF THE VICTIM’S FAMILY.

 

UP4 DOWNS OF SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA IS HOLDING THEIR STEP UP FOR DOWN SYNDROME WALK THIS SATURDAY AT PRIEN LAKE PARK.  THIS IS THE MAIN FUNDRAISER EACH YEAR FOR THE ORGANIZATION, WHICH PROVIDES EDUCATION AND SUPPORT FOR DOWN SYNDROME FAMILIES.  ACTOR DAVID DESANCTIS, WHO HAS DOWN SYNDROME, WILL BE THERE TO CELEBRATE THE EVENT, WHICH IS IN ITS 15TH YEAR.  HE WAS FEATURED IN THE MOVIE, “WHERE HOPE GROWS.”

 

THERE WAS A FIRE YESTERDAY MORNING AT AN APARTMENT IN ABBEVILLE.  FIREFIGHTERS RESPONDED TO THE FIRE ON EATON DRIVE AT AROUND EIGHT

A-M.  THERE WERE NO INJURIES AND NONE OF THE NEIGHBORING APARTMENTS WERE DAMAGED.  NEIGHBORS TOLD KLFY TV THAT THE OCCUPANT OF THE APARTMENT LEFT AN UNATTENDED POT ON THE STOVE.

 

U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy failed to undo former President Barack Obama’s signature health care law, but the defeat hasn’t stopped Louisiana’s senior senator from trying to raise money off the effort.  A fundraising pitch sent this week from Cassidy’s campaign urged supporters to send donations by a Saturday deadline to “help Bill keep fighting for what we all know is right.”  The email describes Cassidy working “to keep every Republican’s promise in repealing and replacing the disastrous Obamacare” and says he’s become a “target of liberals” because of it.  His campaign sent a follow-up email Friday seeking donations in which Cassidy pledges to continue working on the health care effort.
