Lafayette police say a 61-year-old woman has died after being hit by a train.

Investigators say a westbound train hit Angela Tolliver of Lafayette as she crossed the tracks at West Third Street about 7:30 a.m. Saturday.  Police said Sunday morning that she had died at an area hospital.

 

Lake Charles police say officers answering a domestic disturbance call shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at them and refused to drop it.  Lake Charles Deputy Chief Mark Kraus says 44-year-old Kevin Lau, an Asian-American, died at a hospital.  Kraus says Chief Donald Dixon has asked Louisiana State Police to investigate the shooting.  It was not immediately clear how many officers were involved.

Louisiana recreational anglers will be able to target red snapper this fall in state waters starting Friday, Nov. 20.  The state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says the fall season will run seven days a week, with a daily bag and possession limit of two fish per person at a 16-inch minimum total length.  LA Creel estimated that Louisiana’s recreational fisherman landed 993,963 pounds of red snapper through Sept. 8 when Louisiana’s state water red snapper season was closed. The new season will allow private anglers to harvest the remaining percentage, 88,823 pounds of red snapper.

 

The Louisiana Supreme Court has again refused to hear a request to overturn Brandon Lavergne’s guilty pleas to two murders, including that of 21-year-old University of Louisiana at Lafayette student Mickey Shunick.  Lavergne’s case was among four requests for reconsideration rejected Friday without comment.  He is serving life sentences for the deaths of Shunick in August 2012 and 35-year-old Lisa Pate in 1999. He acted as his own attorney, the Supreme Court Clerk of Court’s Office has said.

TWO LAKE CHARLES AREA WOMEN HAVE GAINED NATIONAL ATTENTION SINCE THEY STARTED TAKING OLD WEDDING DRESSES AND TURNING THEM INTO LITTLE GOWNS FOR FAMILIES WHO LOST A CHILD JUST BEFORE OR AFTER BIRTH.  ANNA THERIOT TOLD KPLC TV THAT SHE CAME UP WITH THE IDEA AFTER SHE FOUND A WOMAN IN SEATTLE WHO WAS DOING THE SAME THING.  SHE SAYS THE RESPONSE FROM PEOPLE WANTING A GOWN OR WANTING TO DONATE THEIR SEAMSTRESS SERVICES HAS BEEN OVERWHELMING BECAUSE OF SOCIAL MEDIA AND A COUPLE OF NEWS STORIES ABOUT THEIR EFFORTS.  IT’S CALLED ANGEL GOWNS OF SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA AND THEY ARE HOSTING A SEW DAY FOR PEOPLE TO VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME OR SERVICES, AND IT TAKES PLACE SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24TH, AT EPISCOPAL CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHARD IN LAKE CHARLES.

 

JAMES DUPRE COULD BE SEEN TONIGHT OR TOMORROW NIGHT ON THE TELEVISION SHOW, “THE VOICE”.  DUPRE, A NATIVE OF BAYOU CHICOT IN EVANGELINE PARISH, APPEARED THREE WEEKS AGO ON THE PROGRAM DURING THE BLIND AUDITIONS.  HE MADE IT TO THE BATTLE ROUNDS, WHICH BEGIN TONIGHT.  DUPRE IS THE FIFTH SINGER FROM THE ACADIANA AREA TO MAKE IT ON THE PROGRAM OVER THE YEARS.  LAST YEAR, KORYN HAWTHORNE OF ABBEVILLE MADE IT TO THE FINALS.

 

Lafayette police say they have an arrest warrant for 55-year-old Joseph Paul Lilly of Lafayette in the death of 65-year-old Paul Robertson Jr.  Cpl. Paul Mouton says Robertson’s body was found Friday in the doorway of a home on Kelly Drive. He had been shot.  Mouton said in a news release Sunday that an arrest warrant accused Lilly of first-degree murder.
