A 37-YEAR-OLD LAFAYETTE MAN HAS BEEN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY STABBING TO DEATH A TEENAGER WEDNESDAY NIGHT.  17-YEAR-OLD JAVIAN WILLIAMS, WHO HAD MULTIPLE STAB WOUNDS, WAS FOUND BY POLICE IN THE 100 BLOCK OF IANTHA STREET.  HE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL WHERE HE LATER DIED.  LAWRENCE JAMES ALLEN THE SECOND, WHO THE FAMILY SAYS IS THE STEPFATHER OF WILLIAMS, IS BEING CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER.

 

THE SULPHUR MAN, WHO KIDNAPPED TWO GIRLS FROM ROUND ROCK, TEXAS, IS FACING FEDERAL KIDNAPPING CHARGES AND WILL BE EXTRADITED BACK TO AUSTIN FROM COLORADO, WHERE HE AND THE GIRLS WERE FOUND.  AN INVESTIGATION IS ONGOING INTO THE DEATH OF THE GIRL’S MOTHER IN WHICH TERRY MILES IS A PERSON OF INTEREST.  GREG GRIFFITH, THE FATHER OF 14-YEAR-OLD LILI GRIFFITH, THE OLDEST OF THE GIRLS KIDNAPPED, TELLS KPLC TV THAT MILES HAD AN EXTREMELY INAPPROPRIATE RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS DAUGHTER.  HE SAYS HE BELIEVES MILES WAS STALKING HER BEFORE THE KIDNAPPING.

 

The girlfriend of a man who was shot and killed by a Louisiana sheriff’s deputy has pleaded not guilty to charges she assaulted the deputy after intervening in his struggle with her boyfriend.   The Advocate reports that 21-year-old DeQuince Brown entered her plea on Thursday to new, reduced charges that include battery of a police officer and attempted disarming of a peace officer. Brown originally faced a charge of attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.  Last month, a grand jury declined to indict Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Holden Lafleur in the July 6 shooting death of 27-year-old DeJuan Guillory.

 

Gov. John Bel Edwards wants the recent congressional tax overhaul to drive down utility rates for Louisiana consumers.  The Democratic governor sent a letter to the Louisiana Public Service Commission, the state’s utility regulators, citing the new cut to federal corporate income tax rates.  Federal income tax rates are a consideration in calculating what utilities charge customers. Edwards says a 14 percent cut to tax rates businesses pay should force a lowering of the rates Louisiana residents are charged for utilities.

 

THREE TEN-YEAR-OLD GIRLS SPENT A HALF HOUR TUESDAY AFTERNOON TYING GENTLY USED COATS TO POLES AND BENCHES IN DOWNTOWN LAFAYETTE,  EACH WITH A NOTE ON IT TELLING THE PERSON WHO FOUND IT TO USE IT IF THEY ARE COLD.  OLIVIA LOVAS TELLS THE DAILY ADVERTISER SHE SAW A YOUTUBE VIDEO ABOUT THE COATS AND DECIDED TO DO IT IN HER HOMETOWN.  SHE GOT HELP FROM HER FRIENDS GRACE HERPIN AND SIDNEY MILLER AND GOT ABOUT THIRTY USED COATS FROM FRIENDS AND FAMILY THROUGH FACEBOOK.  THE GIRLS, WHO ATTEND L-J ALLEMAN MIDDLE SCHOOL, SAYS THEY LEARNED TO THINK ABOUT THE NEEDS OF OTHERS FROM THEIR PARENTS AND

 

A GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY WAS HELD YESTERDAY IN DOWNTOWN LAKE CHARLES FOR A NEW 270 UNIT APARTMENT COMPLEX.  IT TOOK FOUR YEARS TO GET TO THE POINT OF THE GROUNDBREAKING AND PROPERTY OWNER ROGER LANDRY SAYS THAT’S BECAUSE IT’S A COMPLEX PROJECT.  ON WEDNESDAY, THE CITY COUNCIL ENTERED INTO A DEVELOPMENT AGREEMENT THAT WORKS OUT STREET CLOSURES, TRAFFIC ISSUES AND THE DOWNTOWN STREETSCAPE.  MAYOR NIC HUNTER TELLS KPLC TV THAT HE’S EXCITED TO SEE THE PROGRESS AND BELIEVES IT WILL DRIVE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT IN THE DOWNTOWN AREA.

 

Prosecutors have asked the Louisiana Supreme Court to reinstate an eight-year prison sentence for a St. Landry Parish man convicted of vehicular homicide charges over a crash that killed five people in 2011.  In November, a state appeals court reduced David Leger’s conviction to negligent homicide and ordered him to be resentenced.  The Advocate reports that the East Baton Rouge Parish district attorney’s office has asked the state’s highest court to reinstate Leger’s conviction and sentence. Prosecutors argue the appellate court disregarded evidence that alcohol was a factor in the crash on Interstate 10 in Baton Rouge.
