THE LAFAYETTE CITY COUNCIL WILL CONSIDER AN AMENDMENT TO THE POLICE DEPARTMENT BUDGET THAT WOULD INCREASE THE POLICE CHIEF’S SALARY BY THIRTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ANNUALLY. THE CURRENT PAY RATE FOR THE POLICE CHIEF POSITION IS ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS ANNUALLY. COUNCIL MEMBER KENNETH BOUDREAUX SAYS RAISING THE SALARY MAY ATTRACT MORE APPLICANTS FOR THE JOB AND LEAD TO AN IMPROVED SITUATION IN LAFAYETTE. THE LOUISIANA DEPARTMENT OF WILDLIFE AND FISHERIES IS INVESTIGATING A BOAT CRASH IN WHICH TWO CALCASIEU PARISH SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES WERE INJURED. THE DEPUTIES WERE ON BOARD A SHERIFF’S OFFICE MARINE ENFORCEMENT UNIT ON THE CALCASIEU RIVER SATURDAY AFTERNOON WHEN THEY HIT AN OBJECT IN THE WATER AND CRASHED INTO A TREE. ONE DEPUTY IS IN STABLE CONDITION AT A HOSPITAL WHILE THE OTHER WAS TREATED AND RELEASED. SHERIFF STITCH GUILLORY SAYS NO ONE IS IMMUNE TO BOATING ACCIDENTS INCLUDING THOSE WITH EXTENSIVE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE.

A SEVENTEEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL WAS KILLED IN A SINGLE-VEHICLE CRASH ON WALKER ROAD IN LAFAYETTE MONDAY MORNING AT AROUND THREE-FORTY. TERRY MITCHELL OF LAFAYETTE WAS ONE OF SEVEN PASSENGERS IN THE VEHICLE AND SHE DIED LATER AT THE HOSPITAL. SOME OF THE OCCUPANTS FLED FROM THE SCENE BUT THE DRIVER, WHO WAS A JUVENILE, WAS FOUND. THE JUVENILE DRIVER WAS ARRESTED ON SEVERAL CHARGES INCLUDING NEGLIGENT HOMOCIDE.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of an explosion that destroyed a home in the Beauregard Parish town of Ragley, killing a teenage boy from Alabama and injuring five other people. The explosion Saturday morning leveled the house, throwing debris that severely damaged nearby vehicles and a metal outbuilding. Killed was 16-year-old Deuce Barrere of Theodore, Alabama. Some nearby residents told KPLC-TV that the explosion felt like an earthquake, and that the resulting shock wave knocked items to the floor and caused power outages.
A CHARTER BUS WITH ABOUT FORTY PASSENGERS CAUGHT FIRE WHILE TRAVELING ON I-TEN NEAR THE UNIVERSITY AVENUE EXIT IN LAFAYETTE YESTERDAY EVENING. AUTHORITIES SAY A TIRE BLEW AND IT CAUSED A SPARK THAT IGNITED A FIRE IN THE WHEEL WELL. THERE WAS FIRE DAMAGE TO THE EXTERIOR OF THE BUS BUT NO ONE WAS INJURED. THE PASSENGERS WERE TAKEN TO A NEARBY TRAVEL CENTER.
LAFAYETTE POLICE HAVE RELEASED THE IDENTITY OF A LAFAYETTE MAN WHO WAS SHOT AND KILLED SATURDAY MORNING AT A BARBERSHOP AT THE CORNER OF LOUISIANA AVENUE AND SIMCOE STREET. FORTY-EIGHT-YEAR-OLD JOHNNY TRAILER WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. A SECOND PERSON WAS SHOT AND IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION AT AN AREA HOSPITAL. LAFAYETTE POLICE DETECTIVES ARE INVESTIGATING.
