ABBEVILLE POLICE ARE INVESTIGATING A DEADLY SHOOTING.  MEGAN KELLY REPORTS.

COMMONWEALTH L-N-G HAS FORMALLY APPLIED FOR PERMITS TO BUILD A LIQUIFIED NATURAL GAS EXPORT FACILITY ON FOUR HUNDRED ACRES IN CAMERON PARISH.  THE HOUSTON-BASED COMPANY IS EXPECTED TO MAKE A FINAL DECISION ON WHETHER TO INVEST IN THE PROJECT BY THE END OF 2020.  COMMONWEALTH L-N-G PROPOSES TO BUILD SIX UNITS WITH THE CAPACITY TO SHIP BETWEEN 8-POINT-4 AND NINE-POINT-5 MILLION TONS OF LIQUIFIED NATURAL GAS BY 2024.  THE PROJECT IS EXPECTED TO COST ABOUT FOUR BILLION DOLLARS AND PRODUCE CLOSE TO TWO THOUSAND CONSTRUCTION JOBS.

 

A NEW FULLY STAFFED POLICE PRECINCT WILL BE OPENING IN THE OLD CITY HALL IN DOWNTOWN LAFAYETTE SOMETIME BEFORE CHRISTMAS.  POLICE CHIEF TOBY AGUILLARD SAYS OFFICERS FROM THAT PRECINCT WILL PATROL DOWNTOWN AND THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOODS DURING THE DAY AND THE LATE NIGHT DUTY WILL CONTINUE.  AGUILLARD SAYS PATROLS WILL BE MANNED EVERY NIGHT BY A GROUP THAT HAS BEEN SPECIALLY TASKED TO DEAL WITH ISSUES UNIQUE TO THE DOWNTOWN AREA SUCH AS CROWDS, TRANSIENTS AND MENTAL ILLNESS.  HE SAYS ONE PROBLEM THE DEPARTMENT IS HAVING IS FILLING NEW POSITIONS AS THEY HAVE LOST 22 OFFICERS THIS YEAR.

 

Louisiana’s first and only female governor, Kathleen Babineaux Blanco, is returning to the state’s ornate Capitol for her last time.  On Thursday, her casket will be carried into the building to the sound of a 21-gun salute honoring her service.  Mourners are expected to pack the Louisiana Capitol to pay their last respects to the Democrat who led the state during the massive blows of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.  Public visitation at the Capitol will follow a morning interfaith service in a downtown Baton Rouge cathedral to memorialize Blanco, the start of three days of events for the former governor.

 

A Louisiana man accused of setting fire to a trailer owned by his former in-laws has been arrested more than a year after the blaze.  The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal says 41-year-old Nelson Santignan was taken into custody Monday by St. Martin Parish sheriff’s deputies.  A news release from the state agency’s spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says investigators were called to determine the cause of the July 2018 fire in Breaux Bridge, which they determined was intentionally set.  Rodrigue says witness statements revealed Santignan was the homeowner’s former son-in-law and was seen leaving the trailer as smoke started coming from it.

 

THE JENNINGS POLICE DEPARTMENT HAS POSTED PHOTOS OF A SUSPECT WHO STOLE PROPERTY FROM A BUSINESS ON MAIN STREET.  THE PHOTOS ON THE POLICE DEPARTMENT’S FACEBOOK PAGE SHOW A MAN WITH TATOOS ON HIS ARM TAKING A LAWN TRIMMER FROM THE BUSINESS. HE WAS ALSO SEEN APPROACHING THE BUSINESS ON A BICYCLE.  IF YOU CAN IDENTIFY THE MAN, YOU ARE ASKED TO CALL THE JENNINGS POLICE DEPARTMENT.

 

A HOME ON NORTH WESTERN AVENUE IN CROWLEY HAS BEEN ADDED TO THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES.  THE HOME BELONGED TO DAVID L. AND JEANERETTE ROSS MAY, A PROMINENT AFRICAN-AMERICAN COUPLE WHO WERE RECOGNIZED BY THE CROWLEY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AS OUTSTANDING CITIZENS OF THE YEAR IN 1980.  HENRY CLEMENT, WHO WAS TAUGHT PIANO BY MRS. MAY, CURRENTLY OWNS THE HOME.  HIS CAREER IN EDUCATION AND MUSIC TOOK HIM TO OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA BUT HE KEPT A PROMISE TO RETURN TO CROWLEY AND PURCHASE THE HOME WITH THE GOAL OF RESTORING IT AS A SYMBOL OF THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION, PRIDE AND DIGNITY.

 

A powerful Louisiana business lobbying group wants a Republican for governor, but isn’t choosing between the two major GOP contenders challenging Democratic incumbent John Bel Edwards.  PACs for the Louisiana Association of Business and Industry announced Wednesday they will support both U.S. Rep. Ralph Abraham and businessman Eddie Rispone on the Oct. 12 ballot.  The organization, known as LABI, is influential in state politics, carrying significant sway with the Louisiana Legislature. Edwards has clashed with the lobbying group over tax and spending policies during his term.
