THERE WAS A HOUSE FIRE IN THE 18-HUNDRED BLOCK OF MEDORA STREET LAST NIGHT THAT BEGAN AT AROUND 6:30. DISTRICT CHIEF CHRISTOPHER CARROLL SAYS THEY RECEIVED A CALL ABOUT A FIRE AT A HOME WITH CHILDREN AND AN ADULT INSIDE. WHEN THEY ARRIVED, THE CHILDREN WERE SAFELY OUTSIDE BUT THE ADULT HAD TO BE RESCUED FROM THE LIVING ROOM AREA AND WAS TAKEN FOR TREATMENT OF SMOKE INHALATION AND OTHER NON-LIFE THREATENING INJURIES. THE HOME DID NOT HAVE A SMOKE ALARM.

A FIRE DESTROYED THE HOME OF THE MAURICE ASSISTANT POLICE CHIEF FRIDAY MORNING. THE FAMILY OF GUY NERREN WAS ASLEEP IN THEIR MOBILE HOME WHEN THE FIRE BROKE OUT. NERREN SAYS THEY GOT OUT SAFELY BECAUSE THEY HEARD THE SMOKE ALARM GO OFF. HE TELLS KLFY TV THAT HIS STORY IS A LESSON TO EVERYONE TO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A WORKING SMOKE ALARM IN YOUR HOME, BECAUSE THE EXTRA FEW SECONDS SAVED THE LIVES OF HIS FAMILY.

Beginning yesterday, Louisiana consumers now pay slightly less for purchases as the state sales tax rate dropped with the start of the new budget year. The sales tax had been slated to decrease from 5 percent to 4 percent. But lawmakers renewed point-4-5 percent of the expiring tax to avert steep cuts to college campuses and government-financed programs. With that legislative action, the sales tax rate is shrinking to 4.45 percent instead.
