The number of COVID-19 cases reported in Louisiana has jumped by eight hundred eighty-two, to a total of fifty-two thousand four hundred seventy-seven. The number of people hospitalized with the disease has decreased by fifteen to a total of six hundred thirty-one. Those on ventilators dropped by six to seventy-seven. The death toll from the disease rose by eighteen to 3,039.

 

THERE WERE ONE HUNDRED THIRTY-TWO MORE CORONAVIRUS CASES IN ACADIANA.  LAFAYETTE PARISH HAD THE MOST WITH EIGHTY. LAFAYETTE HAS SEEN THEIR MOST CASES OVER A FIVE DAY PERIOD AND THE POSITIVE TEST RATE DURING THAT TIME WAS EIGHT-POINT-NINE PERCENT, NEARLY DOUBLE THE OVERALL RATE.  HOSPITALIZATIONS HAVE NEARLY DOUBLED IN LAFAYETTE OVER THE LAST TWO WEEKS.   THERE WERE TWO MORE COVID NINETEEN DEATHS FOR ACADIANA.  THAT INCLUDED ONE IN BOTH ACADIA & ST. MARY PARISHES, BRINGING THE TOTAL NUMBER OF DEATHS TO TWO HUNDRED THIRTY-NINE.

 

SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA HAD FORTY-SEVEN NEW COVID-NINETEEN CASES, WITH A TOTAL OF ONE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED TWENTY-ONE. CALCASIEU PARISH ADDED THE MOST WITH THIRTY-NINE NEW CASES. THERE WERE TWO DEATHS REPORTED, BREAKING A THREE DAY STREAK OF NO DEATHS IN THE REGION. THEY INCLUDED ONE IN BEAUREGARD AND ONE IN CALCASIEU PARISH.  THE TOTAL NUMBER OF DEATHS IS NOW AT SEVENTY-NINE.

Louisiana senators are proposing to withhold millions in pay raises planned for state workers in their $33 billion-plus operating budget recommendation. The Senate Finance Committee on Wednesday advanced its budget proposal for the financial year beginning July 1 to the full Senate for debate. The plan would steer an estimated $60 million in salary hikes that state employees were slated to receive into a set-aside fund. Lawmakers would determine later in the budget year if they want to release the money for the pay increases — or if the coronavirus pandemic has hammered the state’s finances too much to afford such raises.

 

A Louisiana musician has been fired from his job as a paramedic after he posted a photo on social media that shows a person wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood and a drawing of a car running into protesters. Acadian Companies said in a statement on Facebook Tuesday that they had fired Jamie Bergeron for the Instagram posts. Bergeron had been a paramedic with the company. He also leads a south Louisiana music group called Jamie Bergeron and the Kickin’ Cajuns.

 

THE ASSIST AGENCY’S SUMMER FEEDING PROGRAM FOR JEFF DAVIS PARISH RESUMES ON MONDAY.  THEY WILL BE DISTRIBUTING MEALS BETWEEN ELEVEN A-M AND ONE P-M EVERY MONDAY AND TUESDAY THROUGH JULY TWENTY-EIGHTH.  THE SITES ON MONDAY ARE JENNINGS, WELSH, AND LAKE ARTHUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.  ON TUESDAYS, MEALS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED AT FENTON ELEMENTARY AND ELTON HIGH SCHOOL.

 

THE CROWLEY ANIMAL SHELTER WILL BECOME A NO KILL ANIMAL RESCUE SHELTER.  THE CITY COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED AN AGREEMENT IN WHICH HASEYA’S NEW BEGINNING ANIMAL RESCUE WILL MANAGE THE OPERATIONS OF THE SHELTER WITH HELP FROM THE CITY.  CROWLEY MAYOR TIM MONCEAUX BEGAN LOOKING INTO TURNING THE SHELTER INTO A NO KILL SHELTER AFTER ANOTHER ANIMAL RESCUE GROUP CLAIMED THAT THE SHELTER WOULD BEGIN EUTHANIZING ALL DOGS.  MONCEAUX WORKED WITH THE CITY OF RAYNE IN PUTTING TOGETHER AN ORDINANCE BECAUSE RAYNE’S SHELTER IS ALSO RUN BY HASEYA’S NEW BEGINNING.
