(AP)  The Lake Charles Housing Authority has received approval from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the High School Park demolition. The American Press reports the redevelopment will follow the design of most new-wave sustainable housing, focusing on decreasing density. The original plan showed the number of units falling from 72 to 50. The redevelopment has been supported by the community and the City Council. Authority executive director Ben Taylor says meetings with residents have shown a positive response. Taylor says the project will cost about $10 million, with the funds coming from multiple sources. Taylor says the next step of the process is to relocate residents living in the area. The neighborhood is on the 1700 block of Second Street between Second and Third avenues.

(AP) A weekend auction got rid of hundreds of items from the Rapides Parish Coliseum and added $18,000 to its renovation fund. The Town Talk reports that everything available sold, including appliances and furniture, a white Ford Ranger and 52,000 square feet of flooring. The Coliseum is undergoing a $22.9 million renovation. The auction started at 10 a.m. Saturday and everything was sold by noon. Police Juror Bubba Moreau, a licensed auctioneer, donated his time. Some couches went for several hundred dollars, a set of three beer taps went for $320. Oak flooring went for 85 cents a square foot, or $4,420. Police Jury staff member Vickie Sergent says the profit was more than expected.

(AP)  A federal appeals court in New Orleans is set to hear arguments on whether the state must report to the U.S. government about schools and families in Louisiana’s program to provide some students with taxpayer-funded private school tuition vouchers. The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear an appeal by pro-voucher groups who say the Justice Department is trying to stifle the program. It provides tuition to some low- and moderate-income families whose children otherwise would go to low-performing public schools. The Legislature approved the voucher program, supported by Gov. Bobby Jindal, in 2012. The state has said compiling the reports for federal officials won’t hurt the program. But some voucher supporters are pressing on with the appeal. They’re represented by the conservative Goldwater Institute.
