THE ST. MARTIN PARISH SHERIFF’S OFFICE IS INVESTIGATING A DOUBLE SHOOTING THAT HAPPENED SATURDAY NIGHT ON MARTIN DUPUIS ROAD IN BREAUX BRIDGE.  JEFF HORCHAK HAS MORE.

Officials say a passenger train carrying nearly 60 people to New Orleans and other destinations became stranded for at least six hours when a swing bridge malfunctioned in Westlake.  Amtrak spokeswoman Chelsea Kopta said the Sunset Limited was operating between Los Angeles and New Orleans on Sunday and was delayed when it was unable to cross a bridge.  The railroad owner, Union Pacific, says the swing bridge broke shortly before noon when it was in the process of moving back into place.  Amtrak planned to take them to Beaumont where alternate transportation would be provided.

 

THE MOZILLA COMMUNITY GIGABITE FUND IS GIVING 55 THOUSAND DOLLARS IN GRANTS TO THE LAFAYETTE SCIENCE MUSEUM, THE DAVID THIBODEAUX STEM ACADEMY AND TO U-L.  THE LAFAYETTE SCIENCE MUSEUM WILL USE THEIR GRANT TO DEVELOP A VIRTUAL REALITY GAME CALLED COASTAL QUEST, WHICH ALLOWS VISITORS TO EXPLORE COASTAL EROSION AND SELECT THE COASTAL DEFENSE THAT WILL SLOW OR MITIGATE EROSION.  STUDENTS AT THE STEM ACADEMY WILL CREATE A VIRTUAL REALITY WALKTHROUGH OF THE ATOMIC AGORA TINY HOUSE BY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY.  U-L WILL DEVELOP A COLLEGE LEVEL COURSE THAT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS CAN PARTICIPATE IN VIA A 4-K VIDEO STREAM.  U-L AND THE STEM ACADEMY WILL ALSO PILOT AN IMMERSIVE VIRTUAL REALITY FIELD TRIP THAT ALLOWS EDUCATORS AND EXPERTS TO GUIDE AND ASSESS STUDENTS THROUGH THE CLECO ALTERNATIVE ENERGY CENTER IN CROWLEY.

 

Louisiana’s education department has created an online tool aimed at helping families evaluate and compare K-12 public schools and child care centers around the state.  The online site, called the Louisiana School Finder, will launch tomorrow at LouisianaSchools.com .  The searchable site will list performance scores and ratings for each school and early childhood center; show course offerings and extracurricular activities available by school; and provide basic information about hours of operation, location and website.  Parents will be able to compare schools and child care centers and do customizable searches.

 

The St. Landry Parish School Board has voted to give employees a $1,000 bonus check next month.  The board’s finance committee last week approved Superintendent Patrick Jenkins’ recommendation to give full-time workers a $750 supplement in addition to their regular paycheck as a Christmas bonus.  Board member James Hayeson asked the board to give employees a $1,000 supplement with another $250 granted to substitute workers. His motion passed.  No vote was taken on the $750 proposal.

 

THE COMMUNITY OF VINTON HOSTED A BENEFIT TO RAISE MONEY TO GET NIBLETT’S BLUFF PARK BACK UP AND RUNNING.  THE PARK WAS CLOSED IN MARCH OF LAST YEAR BECAUSE OF FLOODING FROM THE SABINE RIVER, AND JUST WHEN IT WAS ABOUT TO OPEN, ALONG CAME HURRICANE HARVEY TO FLOOD IT AGAIN.  NIBLETT’S BLUFF PARK COMMISSION PRESIDENT DARRELL SHULL TELLS KPLC TV THAT THEY ARE CLOSE TO OPENING THE PARK.  HE SAYS THEY STILL HAVE TO SEND WATER SAMPLES FROM THE PARK TO THE STATE FOR TESTING AND ONCE IT’S APPROVED, THEY CAN OPEN IT TO THE PUBLIC.

 

THE CITY OF CROWLEY HOSTED A VETERAN’S DAY EVENT YESTERDAY TO HONOR THOSE WHO SERVED OUR COUNTRY.  THE ANNUAL VETERAN’S DAY PROGRAM WAS HELD AT THE RICE THEATRE.  THE FEATURED GUEST SPEAKERS WERE CONGRESSMAN CLAY HIGGINS AND THE OLDEST LIVING VETERAN IN ACADIA PARISH.  THE EVENT WAS SPONSORED BY THE CITY OF CROWLEY, THE MAYOR AND THE BOARD OF ALDERMEN.

 

A group of aspiring Louisiana State troopers began their journey Sunday.  Forty-nine men and women officially became Louisiana State Police cadets when they reported to the agency’s training academy in Baton Rouge to begin an intensive training regimen. Candidates for Class #97 were chosen after completing an extensive hiring process. During the roughly 20 week-long academy, cadets will receive training in advanced crash investigation, emergency vehicle operations, impaired driving detection, traffic incident management, cultural diversity, effective communication, and leadership skills.
