A JUVENILE WAS SHOT JUST AFTER NINE LAST NIGHT IN LAFAYETTE.  POLICE RESPONDED TO REPORTS OF SHOTS FIRED IN THE SIX HUNDRED BLOCK OF VIEW ORLEANS CIRCLE WHERE THEY FOUND THE JUVENILE.  HE WAS TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL AND IS LISTED IN STABLE CONDITION.  ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THIS SHOOTING IS ASKED TO CALL TWO-THREE-TWO-TIPS.

 

A MAN WAS SHOT AND KILLED SATURDAY AFTERNOON IN OPELOUSAS.  POLICE, RESPONDING TO REPORTS OF A SHOOTING IN THE ONE HUNDRED BLOCK OF SOUTH ACADEMY STREET, FOUND THE MAN SUFFERING FROM MULTIPLE GUNSHOT WOUNDS AND LYING IN THE ROADWAY.  OFFICERS ATTEMPTED LIFE SAVING MEASURES AT THE SCENE, BUT HE WAS DECLARED DEAD BY EMERGENCY MEDICAL PERSONNEL.  POLICE WILL RELEASE THE MAN’S IDENTITY WHEN HIS FAMILY HAS BEEN NOTIFIED.

 

Louisiana’s highest court says a prohibition on nonunanimous jury verdicts in the state does not have to be applied retroactively to past convictions. Friday’s ruling came in the case of Reginald Reddick, who was convicted of murder by a 10-2 jury vote in 1997. It has implications for hundreds of others imprisoned on nonunanimous verdicts. In 2018, Louisiana voters approved a constitutional amendment prohibiting nonunanimous verdicts in trials for crimes committed after Jan. 1, 2019.

 

AN IOWA MAN WAS ARRESTED FRIDAY AFTER HE SHOT AT KIDS WHO WERE TPING HIS HOME ON ALISTER COURT.  THE MAN, THIRTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD JOSHUA G. MOUTON, TOLD CALCASIEU PARISH SHERIFF’S DEPUTIES HE THOUGHT SOME PEOPLE WERE TRYING TO STEAL HIS CAR.  ONE OF THE KIDS WAS SHOT IN THE LEG, BULLETS HIT A CAR AND AN ADULT, WHO DROVE THE KIDS HOME, HAD A BULLET HOLE IN HIS BASEBALL CAP.  MOUTON WAS BOOKED ON NUMEROUS CHARGES INCLUDING THREE COUNTS OF ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF A FIREARM BY A CONVICTED FELON.

 

A GAS STATION IN THE THIRTY-EIGHT-HUNDRED BLOCK OF MOSS STREET IN LAFAYETTE WAS ROBBED AT AROUND ONE-THIRTY THIS MORNING.  A BLACK MAN, WEARING A BLACK HOODED SWEATER WITH BLACK AND WHITE PLAID SHORTS AND ARMED WITH A HANDGUN, DEMANDED MONEY FROM THE STORE CLERK.  HE FLED WITH AN UNDISCLOSED AMOUNT OF CASH.  LAFAYETTE POLICE AND CRIME STOPPERS ASKS ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ON THIS ARMED ROBBERY TO CALL TWO-THREE-TWO-TIPS.

Federal judges have ordered a 9-year-old lawsuit against oil and gas companies over damage to Louisiana wetlands to be returned to state court for trial. The ruling by a panel of the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals potentially clears the way for over 40 similar suits to move forward. That panel on Monday upheld a decision by a now-deceased U.S. district judge. A spokesperson for the companies could not say whether they will appeal.

 

The Lafayette police department has named its first woman to lead the law enforcement agency. The Advocate reports Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory has selected Capt. Judith Estorge to be the Police Department’s new permanent chief. Estorge’s appointment follows 2 1/2 years of leadership upheaval at the department. She assumes the new post Nov. 1.
