THE IDENTITY OF THE VICTIM AND SHOOTER IN WEDNESDAY NIGHT’S SHOOTING ON WEST STREET IN JENNINGS HAS BEEN RELEASED.  POLICE SAY THE ALLEGED SHOOTER, STEVEN JOHN EDWARDS, FIRED SHOTS FROM THE BACK WINDOW OF A CAR, BARELY MISSING A THREE-YEAR-OLD, WHO WAS IN THE BACK SEAT OF A VEHICLE, BUT STRIKING BOTH ADULTS.  42-YEAR-OLD DWIGHT BREAUX OF WELSH WAS KILLED, AND THE OTHER ADULT IS RECOVERING FROM INJURIES.  POLICE CHIEF DANNY SEMMES SAYS THEY BELIEVE THE SHOOTING WAS RELATED TO A DRUG DEAL THAT WAS TAKING PLACE.

 

RAYNE POLICE HAVE MADE A FOURTH ARREST IN CONNECTION WITH A SHOOTING THAT HAPPENED AFTER THE RAYNE HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME LAST FRIDAY.  SEVERAL VEHICLES IN THE STADIUM PARKING LOT WERE STRUCK BY BULLETS AND WITNESSES SAID PEOPLE WERE TAKING COVER.  ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT, THE FOURTH SUSPECT, 21-YEAR-OLD CHRISTIAN ROBINSON OF RAYNE, WAS BOOKED INTO THE ACADIA PARISH JAIL ON SEVERAL CHARGES.  RAYNE POLICE SAID IN A FACEBOOK POST THAT ROBINSON ALLEGEDLY ATTEMPTED TO COVER UP THE SHOOTING.

 

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards is accusing his Republican opponent Eddie Rispone of intending to kick thousands of people off Medicaid if he wins the runoff election.  Rispone has said he intends to “freeze” enrollment in the Edwards-created Medicaid expansion program until he can eliminate wasteful spending he believes exists in the program.  Edwards says Rispone’s plan would force most expansion enrollees from the government-financed health insurance within two to three years.  About 470,000 people get health insurance through the Medicaid expansion.

 

U-L POLICE HAVE MADE AN ARREST IN A PURSE SNATCHING INCIDENT FROM LAST MONTH.  ON SEPTEMBER 17TH, A WOMAN ENTERING A BUILDING FELT A TUG ON HER BACKPACK AND TURNED AROUND TO SEE A MAN WITH HER KEYS AND CLUTCH WALLET RUNNING OUT OF THE BUILDING.  ON OCTOBER TENTH,

U-L POLICE WERE CALLED TO THE LIBRARY ABOUT A SUSPICIOUS MAN AND THEY ARRESTED HIM, AFTER DETERMINING HE MATCHED THE DESCRIPTION OF THE PURSE SNATCHER.  DURING THE INVESTIGATION, A POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION WAS MADE, AND THE ALLEGED PURSE SNATCHER, LANE TRAHAN, WAS ARRESTED YESTERDAY AND BOOKED INTO THE LAFAYETTE PARISH CORRECTIONAL CENTER.

 

A LAKE CHARLES MAN, WHO WAS FACING AN ATTEMPTED SECOND DEGREE MURDER CHARGE, HAD THE CHARGE UPGRADED WHEN THE WOMAN HE ALLEGEDLY INJURED DIED ON WEDNESDAY.  POLICE WERE CALLED TO A DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE JUST AFTER MIDNIGHT TUESDAY AND TRANSPORTED  AN INJURED WOMAN TO THE HOSPITAL, 38-YEAR-OLD ROBBIE GAYLE VITAL.  AFTER SHE DIED WEDNESDAY, 30-YEAR-OLD JEWEL HUMPHREY WAS CHARGED WITH SECOND DEGREE MURDER AND DOMESTIC ABUSE CHILD ENDANGERMENT.  HIS BOND WAS SET AT ONE-POINT-4-5 MILLION DOLLARS.

 

THE NEW IBERIA CITY COUNCIL IS ASKING THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION AND DEVELOPMENT TO MOVE UP RAILROAD CROSSING IMPROVEMENTS IN THEIR CITY TO THE HIGHEST PRIORITY LEVEL ON THEIR LIST.  THE STATE DEDICATED THREE MILLION DOLLARS TO IMPROVE SEVERAL RAILROAD CROSSINGS IN NEW IBERIA BUT THE PROJECTS NEED TO BE FUNDED AND CARRIED OUT, ACCORDING TO CITY COUNCILMAN DAVID BROUSSARD.  HE’S ASKING RESIDENTS TO CALL THEIR STATE REPRESENTATIVES AND SENATORS TO VOICE THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE PROJECTS.  THE PLAN IS TO ADD FLASHING LIGHTS AND CROSSING ARMS AT THE RAILROAD CROSSINGS ON JULIA, IBERIA, FRENCH, PROVIDENCE AND WEEKS STREETS.

 

LOUISIANA WILL BE GETTING MORE THAN TWO MILLION DOLLARS FROM JOHNSON AND JOHNSON AS PART OF A SETTLEMENT FROM AN INVESTIGATION INTO DECEPTIVE MARKETING BY THE COMPANY.  FORTY STATES AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA WERE INVOLVED IN THE INVESTIGATION THAT FOUND THE COMPANY VIOLATED STATE CONSUMER PROTECTION LAWS BY MISREPRESENTING THE SAFETY AND EFFECTIVENESS OF ONE OF THEIR MEDICAL DEVICES.  LOUISIANA ATTORNEY GENERAL JEFF LANDRY SAYS THE EVIDENCE SHOWS JOHNSON AND JOHNSON KNEW ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES OF SERIOUS MEDICAL COMPLICATIONS FROM THE DEVICE BUT DID NOT PROVIDE SUFFICIENT WARNING TO CONSUMERS OR THE SURGEONS.  THE SETTLEMENT WITH ALL OF THE STATES TOTALED NEARLY 117 MILLION DOLLARS, OF WHICH LOUISIANA WILL RECEIVE NEARLY TWO-POINT-2 MILLION.
