YESTERDAY THE LAFAYETTE CITY PARISH GOVERNMENT OFFICIALLY OPENED FOUR MILES OF NEW HIKING AND RUNNING TRAILS IN A WOODED AREA NEAR THE ACADIANA PARK NATURE STATION ON THE NORTHERN EDGE OF THE CITY. THE TRAIL CAN BE ACCESSED OFF OF SHADOW BLUFF DRIVE, AND IS MARKED BY A SIGN AND A MAP OF THE TRAIL. SCOTT SCHILLING, WHO HELPED ORGANIZE THE VOLUNTEER EFFORT TO CLEAR A TRAIL, SAYS THEY HOPE IN THE FUTURE TO INSTALL BIKE RACKS AND BUILD A BRIDGE TO GIVE ACCESS TO THE TRAILS FROM THE NATURE STATION. HE TELLS THE ADVOCATE THAT HE WAS SURPRISED TO FIND SUCH A BEAUTIFUL, THICKLY WOODED AREA THAT’S SO CLOSE TO LAFAYETTE.





LAST NIGHT, CALCASIEU PARISH SCHOOL BOARD MEMBER FRED HARDY HELD THE FIRST OF SEVERAL PLANNED MEETINGS FOR PARENTS OF STUDENTS IN HIS DISTRICT. HARDY SAYS ALL THE SCHOOLS IN HIS DISTRICT – WASHINGTON MARION HIGH SCHOOL, MOLO MIDDLE, CLIFTON ELEMENTARY AND COMBRE-FONDEL ELEMENTARY – HAVE LOW PERFORMANCE SCORES. HARDY SAYS HE WANTS TO GIVE PARENTS AT THE MEETINGS EVIDENCE OF THE PROBLEM AND POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS. HARDY TELLS THE AMERICAN PRESS THAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW THERE’S A PROBLEM AND THEY NEED TO MAKE A DECISION ABOUT WHAT THEY CAN DO.





NEW SECURITY CAMERA SYSTEMS WILL BE INSTALLED IN SEVEN ST. LANDRY PARISH SCHOOLS OVER THE CHRISTMAS BREAK. LAST NIGHT THE ST. LANDRY PARISH SCHOOL BOARD AGREED TO ACCEPT A FEDERAL GRANT OF 91 THOUSAND DOLLARS WITH THE HELP OF THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE, AND THEY AWARDED A 146 THOUSAND DOLLAR CONTRACT TO LOUISIANA SPECIAL SYSTEMS FOR THE SECURITY EQUIPMENT. THE EQUIPMENT INCLUDES HIGH RESOLUTION CAMERAS, DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDERS, FLAT SCREEN MONITORS AND POWER SUPPLIES. THE EQUIPMENT WILL BE INSTALLED AT WASHINGTON, PLAISANCE, GRAND PRAIRIE AND LAWTELL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND AT NORTHWEST, NORTH CENTRAL AND BEAU CHENE HIGH SCHOOLS.





Louisiana National Guard personnel seeking benefits for same-sex spouses will have an easier time filing the requests, despite a state refusal to let its workers process the paperwork. National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Mike Kazmierzak said Thursday that the U.S. officer who oversees federal property for the state National Guard will move some workers to federal status — so federal employees will handle the enrollments. The move will keep state employees from violating Louisiana's ban on gay marriage. But it also puts Louisiana in line with a Pentagon directive authorizing the same-sex benefits.

FORMER PASTOR JAMES BERTRAND WAS ARRESTED BY LAKE CHARLES POLICE YESTERDAY ON DRUG CHARGES, AND JUDGE RON WARE SET HIS BOND AT JUST OVER TWO MILLION DOLLARS. POLICE NOTICED A SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE AT THE DEAD END OF KINGSLEY STREET AND FOUND BERTRAND SITTING IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT. DEPUTY CHIEF MARK KRAUS SAYS THEY FOUND A PLASTIC BAG OF COCAINE ON THE CENTER CONSOLE AND A HYPODERMIC NEEDLE ON HIS LAP. ACCORDING TO K-P-L-C T-V, THIS IS BERTRAND’S TENTH ARREST THIS YEAR.





A ST. MARTINVILLE MAN WAS KILLED IN A SINGLE VEHICLE ACCIDENT WEDNESDAY NIGHT ON L-A 96 NEAR DUCHAMP ROAD. STATE POLICE SAY 55-YEAR-OLD BRADY HEBERT WAS TRAVELING NORTH IN HIS 2001 FORD PICKUP WHEN HE LEFT THE ROAD AND STRUCK A DITCH EMBANKMENT, OVERTURNING HIS VEHICLE. HEBERT WAS NOT WEARING A SEAT BELT, WAS EJECTED, AND DECLARED DEAD AT THE SCENE. TOXICOLOGY SAMPLES WERE TAKEN AND SUBMITTED TO THE STATE POLICE CRIME LAB TO DETERMINE IF IMPAIRMENT WAS A FACTOR IN THE CRASH.





Four years after a mill to spin cotton yarn opened in Lacassine, plans for a bigger mill in Bunkie have been unveiled. Dan Feibus, CEO of Gulf Coast Spinning LLC, says his firm will build a $130 million mill employing 307 people. When Zagis USA built a $20 million mill in Lacassine, state officials said Zagis planned a second mill. Gov. Bobby Jindal says Gulf Coast Spinning is a separate venture but the project's second phase.
