A former employee of the Opelousas Housing Authority has pleaded guilty to helping rig the bidding process on construction projects. U.S. Attorney Stephanie A. Finley said Thursday that 75-year-old Garnette L. Thomas entered the plea before U.S. Magistrate Judge Patrick Hanna to a charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Thomas, of San Antonio, Texas, faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and restitution. Sentencing was set for Jan. 10.





A LAKE CHARLES MAN WAS ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTING TO HAVE INAPPROPRIATE CONTACT WITH A CHILD FOR THE SECOND TIME IN TWO MONTHS. 50-YEAR-OLD TERRY JAMES GOODEAUX WAS ARRESTED YESTERDAY AFTER HE WAS ACCUSED OF MAKING THE ATTEMPT ON A SEVEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL WHO WAS VISITING A FAMILY WHO LIVES IN THE SAME MOBILE HOME PARK AS GOODEAUX. LAST MONTH, GOODEAUX WAS ARRESTED FOR INAPPROPRIATE CONTACT WITH TWO SEVEN-YEAR-OLDS FROM THE SAME MOBILE HOME PARK, LOCATED ON L. BENOIT ROAD. HIS BOND HAS BEEN SET AT 150 THOUSAND DOLLARS.





SWIRE OILFIELD SERVICES HELD A GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY YESTERDAY FOR A NEW SPECIALIZED MANUFACTURING BUILDING THAT WILL BE GOING UP IN THE DUSON AREA. THE 27 ACRE DEVELOPMENT IS EXPECTED TO OPEN IN APRIL OF NEXT YEAR AND WILL SERVE AS A REGIONAL HUB FOR THEIR PRODUCT LINES TO THE GULF OF MEXICO MARKET. THE COMPANYíS PRESIDENT STEVE HARDWICK SAYS THEY WILL INITIALLY HIRE TWENTY TO THIRTY PEOPLE, BUT EVENTUALLY MORE THAN A HUNDRED WILL BE HIRED AS THEY GROW. DUSON MAYOR JOHNNY THIBODEAUX CREDITED ACADIA AND LAFAYETTE PARISH OFFICIALS FOR ATTRACTING THE COMPANY TO THE AREA AND HE SAYS IT WILL BENEFIT BOTH PARISHES.





LOUISIANA HAD A TOTAL NONFARM EMPLOYMENT WORKFORCE OF ONE-POINT-9-6 MILLION IN AUGUST, UP ONE-POINT-8 PERCENT OVER LAST YEAR IN THE SAME MONTH. SIX OF THE EIGHT METRO AREAS IN THE STATE SAW AN INCREASE IN EMPLOYMENT. THE LOUISIANA WORKFORCE COMMISSION REPORTS THAT THE LAFAYETTE METRO AREA ADDED 39-HUNDRED JOBS IN AUGUST, UP TWO-POINT-5 PERCENT OVER LAST YEAR. THERE WAS AN ADDITIONAL 36-HUNDRED JOBS IN THE LAKE CHARLES AREA, AN INCREASE OF FOUR PERCENT.

ENTERGY SAYS THERE IS A PLANNED POWER OUTAGE FOR THE DOWNTOWN LAKE CHARLES AREA ON SUNDAY MORNING. THE OUTAGE WILL ALLOW THEM TO WORK ON THE UNDERGROUND POWER NETWORK. IT WILL BEGIN AT 6:30 AND IS EXPECTED TO LAST FOR ABOUT THREE HOURS.





A LAFAYETTE NON-PROFIT HAS BEEN GIVEN A DEADLINE BY THE STATE TREASURER TO PROVIDE DOCUMENTATION SHOWING HOW THEY USED A 300 THOUSAND DOLLAR GRANT. IF THE COLOMB FOUNDATION DOESNíT PROVIDE THE DOCUMENTATION BY OCTOBER 15TH, STATE TREASURER JOHN KENNEDY SAYS THEY MUST PAY BACK THE 300 THOUSAND DOLLARS. THE FOUNDATION WAS GIVEN AN EXTENSION EARLIER THIS MONTH AFTER SUBMITTING SOME PAPERWORK, BUT THEY WILL NOT RECEIVE ANOTHER ONE. THE COLOMB FOUNDATION IS ONE OF SEVEN NON-PROFITS IN THE STATE WHO HAVE NOT YET COMPLIED WITH DEMANDS FROM THE STATE TREASURERíS OFFICE.





Lawyers for two BP rig supervisors charged with manslaughter in the Deepwater Horizon disaster say the indictment should be dismissed because prosecutors accuse the men of violating standards that didn't exist when the explosion killed 11 workers. Robert Kaluza and Donald Vidrine are charged with 11 counts each of involuntary manslaughter and "seaman's manslaughter." U.S. District Judge Stanwood Duval has not ruled on an earlier motion to dismiss the "seaman's manslaughter" charges. He heard those arguments Sept. 18.
