Hold Your Peace
HOLD YOUR PEACE!
The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace and remain at rest.
Exodus 14:14
We can power up when we learn when to speak up and when to shut up:
Speak up (to our heavenly Father in prayer)
and
Shut up (Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer. Ps 19:13-14)
“Hold” your peace….A few synonyms for the word – “hold” - possess, have, keep, retain, own, maintain, occupy, embrace, cling to, grasp, have space for, contain, accommodate, store, carry, sustain, continue, keep up, carry on, manage.
Most of us would translate-“Hold your peace” as -to keep quiet or to remain silent. How quickly the peace of God can be ushered right out of our hearts thru the door of our mouths on a wave of words we shouldn’t be saying. I think it would be safe to say that we have a better chance of holding our peace if we can hold our tongue….we can speak life, but the challenge is more on the lines of not speaking death. It’s paradoxical to think of speaking actually acting as a silencer, a muffler. The noise of our words can mute the voice of the peace of God in our hearts.
There are things in our lives that are being decided in the court of heaven, before the throne of grace and we would do well to obey the gag order, set in place for our protection, giving us the divine ability to remain at peace. I commit myself this day to set a guard over my mouth; asking the Lord to keep watch over the door of my lips. (Ps 141:3) And when we do speak, may we do so as Ps 51:15 says -O Lord, open my lips, And my mouth shall show forth Your praise.
Here are a couple scriptures of encouragement:
The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace and remain at rest.
Exodus 14:14
Oh, that you would altogether hold your peace! Then you would evidence your wisdom and you might pass for wise men. Job 13:5
You have the right to remain silent. May God give us wisdom to know not only when to speak, but what to speak and also when to be silent, to his praise and glory forever!
