Words of Inspiration by Karen Bailey

There’s something about music. Lowers resistance, knocks down walls, leaving us wide open for the message. Look at these lyrics:
All this pain
I wonder if I’ll ever find my way
I wonder if my life could really change at all
All this earth
Could all that is lost ever be found
Could a garden come up from this ground at all

OK…me again…while I was listening to this song today and esp the line- “Could a garden come up from this ground at all,” My mind went back to a picture I saw post Hurricane Katrina. I know for some Katrina was a headline, another story. It was personal to us in Louisiana and Mississippi with front row seats. The storm came, and literally, swept away life as we had known it before. Even being in Baton Rouge, our city changed overnight. (Those changes pale in comparison to the changes in New Orleans). Someone from New Orleans recently told me that now, everything will always be referred to, as before the storm or after the storm. Just one evidence of the indelible mark Katrina left. It was a life changer, not only for the time frame of its occurrence, but that life change continues spilling over into today, 7 years after the fact. There is no going back to normal. There is only finding and establishing a new normal. The picture from my flashback was of a boat that had been tossed far from where it belonged, into the parking lot of a gas station. Somehow soil had collected in that boat and there were sprouts of green, new life coming up from that soil. That new life didn’t bypass the boat because it was out of its usual place. The destruction and devastation littering the landscape mere inches and feet away, did not stop this new life. It was life and all it needed was soil. The seeds of life stubbornly defy the odds all around them. They ride the wind seeking soil for a home, determined to grow there. I’d like to retire the names of a few of my personal storms like they do with the costliest/deadliest hurricanes. Wouldn't you? Today, the combination of that memory and this song stirred deep hope in me again. If a blade of grass or a flower can bloom wherever it finds soil, in spite of the wreckage surrounding it on all sides, what does that say about the power of life? God can breathe on me and on you however far we are from our safe haven, our “norm”. Our hope lies in God giving life, God breathing life, wherever He finds a heart’s soil ready to receive His seed, to respond to His breath of life. We carry within us fertile soil for the work and life of God no matter how turned upside down life becomes, no matter how many miles the storm's wind has tossed us from "home". The resiliency to overcome life’s most difficult challenges explodes when the seed meets the ready soil…look beyond the damage in your body, home, relationships, finances..etc...the answer is in the soil and God's life giving seed. Look at the second verse of the song -
All around
Hope is springing up from this old ground
Out of chaos life is being found in You

You make beautiful things
You make beautiful things out of the dust
