St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz will speak at a rally against grand jury decisions in Missouri and New York not to indict officers in the deaths of two black men.  Guidroz tells The Daily World that he shares the horror many feel about the death on Staten Island of Eric Garner, who died repeating, “I can’t breathe.”  The Thursday evening rally in Opelousas (op-uh-LOO-suhs) is being organized by activist and newly-elected alderman Tyrone Glover, who operates community radio station KOCZ-FM.  Guidroz and Glover have been friends for years and agree that law enforcement responded the wrong way in Garner’s death and that of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

Local officials in Deridder say former Eurythmics singer and guitarist Dave Stewart plans to film a new music video early next year in their century-old Gothic Revival jail.  Secretary-treasurer Tayra DeHoven (duh-HOH-ven) says the Beauregard Parish Police Jury had voted to allow it if she OK’d the lyrics of “Leave This Town.”  She told The Associated Press on Tuesday that she has approved the lyrics, and Stewart’s employees tell her they’re thinking about filming in January or February.  The song features Thomas Lindsey, of DeRidder.

Gov. Bobby Jindal’s administration is questioning whether Education Superintendent John White is dividing his department’s contracts into smaller pieces to sidestep oversight and public bid requirements.  The Office of State Procurement sent White a letter Tuesday saying it found a “questionable volume” of recent contracts ranging from $1,500 to $2,000.  State law provides certain dollar benchmarks for when contracts must be publicly bid, depending on contract type.  Also since July, the Jindal administration has required the Department of Education to get approval for any contract above $2,000, an outgrowth of Jindal’s disagreement with White over the Common Core education standards.

Louisiana’s health secretary told lawmakers that the state expected to receive federal approval for six LSU hospital privatization contracts by last week’s end. That approval still hasn’t arrived.  Health and Hospitals Secretary Kathy Kliebert said Tuesday the lack of an approval letter doesn’t mean the rewritten deals have hit any snags. She says she’s assured in her conversations with the federal Medicaid agency that the financing plans will receive the OK.
