WITH THE REESTABLISHING OF DIPLOMATIC TIES WITH CUBA RECENTLY, A CUBAN CLUB HAS FORMED IN LAFAYETTE.  THE MEMBERS OF THE CLUB ARE CUBANS WHO HAVE LEFT THE ISLAND AND HAVE ESTABLISHED RESIDENCY IN ACADIANA.  THE CLUB HAS BEEN LOBBYING LOUISIANA’S ELECTED LEADERS TO ESTABLISH POLITICAL AND CULTURAL TIES WITH CUBAN LEADERS.  THE PRESIDENT OF THE CLUB, FERNANDO PEREZ VIART, TELLS THE ADVOCATE THAT THEIR GOAL IS TO HELP THE POOR IN CUBA, WHO ARE THE MAJORITY.

 

A GROUP OF ARTISTS AND MUSICIANS HELD A FUNDRAISER YESTERDAY TO SAVE THE CLOCK THAT HANGS ABOVE KEITH’S PAWN SHOP IN DOWNTOWN LAKE CHARLES.  THE SHOP IS CLOSING AND AN ESTATE SALE IS TAKING PLACE, AND SOME PEOPLE ARE WORRIED THAT THE CLOCK WILL BE SOLD AND TAKEN DOWN FROM THE BUILDING, LOCATED AT THE CORNER OF RYAN AND BROAD STREETS.  JASON MACHULSKI IS ALSO TRYING TO RAISE EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS AT THE GOFUNDME WEBSITE, IN ORDER TO SAVE THE CLOCK.  LAURA WALDEMEIER, WHO IS CLOSING THE SHOP, SAYS SHE HOPES WHOEVER WINS THE BID ON THE CLOCK WILL HONOR HER LATE HUSBAND’S WISHES TO KEEP THE CLOCK IN ITS CURRENT LOCATION.

 

Franklin Fire Department officials say a man pulling down a building on his property was killed when the 10-by-20-foot roof fell onto him.  KATC-TV reports that 68-year-old Charles Boudreaux died Saturday morning.  It took 20 minutes for a heavy rescue crew, two engine company crews and several support units to remove his body.  The St. Mary Parish Coroner’s Office declared him dead at the scene.

 

A new federal report says 120 Louisiana workers died on the job last year — six more than in 2013.  New Orleans CityBusiness reports that the Bureau of Labor Statistics found the largest number of such deaths — 37 — were in trade, transportation and utilities.  That was followed by natural resources and mining with 23, construction with 19, government with 12, professional and business services with seven and manufacturing with seven.

A FIRE AT A HOME IN LAKE CHARLES YESTERDAY REIGNITED SEVERAL HOURS AFTER FIRE FIGHTERS PUT IT OUT.  THE FIRE STARTED IN THE BACK OF A HOME LOCATED AT 714 KIRKMAN STREET LATE YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.  NO ONE WAS INJURED IN THE FIRE.  THE LAKE CHARLES FIRE PREVENTION BUREAU IS INVESTIGATING TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THE BLAZE.

 

A CHURCH POINT WOMAN IS IN CRITICAL CONDITION AFTER AN ACCIDENT SATURDAY NIGHT.  57-YEAR-OLD PATRICIA RICHARD WAS ATTEMPTING TO TURN OFF OF HIGHWAY 90 IN BROUSSARD ONTO NORTH GIROURD ROAD.  SHE CROSSED IN FRONT OF A SEMI, WHICH HIT HER VEHICLE IN THE SIDE.  TOXICOLOGY TESTS WERE TAKEN TO DETERMINE IF ALCOHOL PLAYED A FACTOR IN THE ACCIDENT.

 

More than 35,000 of Louisiana’s rank-and-file classified employees received their favorable evaluations, but they’re not getting their pay raises.  Officials at most state government agencies say they don’t have the money and would have to lay off employees to grant the 4 percent salary increases.  The Advocate reports the pay bumps were scheduled to take place Oct. 1, but a majority of the executive branch agencies, along with most colleges and universities, sought and received state Civil Service permission to withhold the extra money.  State workers got raises last year, the first in three years, for some.
